THE HISTORY OF TEXAS
Through most of its early history Texas was settled by various native tribes. The first Europeans arrived in 1519 when Spanish conquistadors came to the area. However the early Europeans saw little of value to keep them in Texas so the first settlement did not occur until 1682 when a small French Colony was established. This colony only lasted a couple of years but it was enough to encourage the Spanish to set up new colonies in the region. In large part this was done to claim the area for Spain and to keep the French from expanding the Louisiana Territory into Texas.

The Spanish would rule Texas as part of its American colonies for the next hundred and forty years. Although only a very small number of people settled in the area. However in 1821 Mexico including Texas won its independence from Spain. The new Mexican government proved to be very unpopular in Texas and almost immediately there was a push for independence. In an attempt to gain independence Texas actively recruited settlers from the United States in the hopes that if there were enough Americans living in the region the US would support them in the fight.

The Texas revolution began in 1835 and would last for about a year. Because of the very small population of Texas there was very little actual fighting, although the Alamo has become famous as a battle site from the war. In reality Texas won its independence mostly by default. The Mexicans were largely unable to administer the region properly so they put up little real resistance to Texas becoming an independent country which occurred in 1836.

Although Texans take great pride in having once been an independent country the truth is the brief period that they were independent were a nightmare for the people who lived there. The Texans proved no more capable of administering the area than the Mexicans had been. The result was a great deal of internal conflict as well as many disputes with the native population. As a result in 1845 at the request of the Texas government the area was annexed by the United States.

Texas would only remain a part of the union for a brief period before leaving again in 1861 at the start of the Civil war. As a member of the Confederacy they fought against the union during the war although there were few actual battles in Texas. Following the war Texas went through a period of reconstruction however as there had been few battles in the state and they had not had a large cotton producing industry anyway they came through it better than the other confederate states. Over the course of the twentieth century Texas has become one of the wealthiest states in the US due largely to cattle and oil production.
——————–
THE CIVIL WAR
Texans proudly talk about the six flags that have flown over the state; one of those was the flag of the confederacy. During the Civil War Texas would fight on behalf of the Confederacy even though today few people think of it as being a southern state. There are various reasons that the Confederate legacy is less pronounced in Texas than in other states.

Texas would secede from the Union in 1861 and join with the confederacy however the decision to do this was somewhat controversial. Unlike most of the other southern states there was considerable support for remaining in the union. One of the leading members of the pro-union faction was the governor Sam Houston. Ultimately it became clear that the majority of the population did support joining the confederacy however this required removing Sam Houston from his position as governor since he refused to take an oath of allegiance to the Confederacy.

Once the war started Texas served mainly as a supply state as there was very little actual fighting in the area. At the time Texas was still fairly sparsely populated, it also didn’t have the large cotton plantations that the other southern states had. This meant that the state suffered less than the other states in the confederacy did during the war. Nevertheless there was a naval blockade of Galveston that made it impossible to Texas to export anything.

Over the course of the Civil War opposition to it increased in Texas in large part because of the attempt to conscript Texans as soldiers. Most Texans supported the war in principle as a way to assert states rights but they were not all that interested in going off to fight on behalf of the wealthy plantation owners in other states. A significant number of Texans would actually join the Union army which is an indication of just how divided the state was on the issue.

As it started to become clear that the Union were going to win the Civil War a large number of soldiers from Texas began to desert from the Confederate army. The state was soon occupied and reconstruction began. This went fairly quickly for Texas since there had been little fighting in the area. In addition since cotton production had made up a relatively small part of the state’s economy they were able to adapt to life without slaves better than most of the other southern states.

Ultimately Texas would be readmitted to the Union in 1870 although this was done despite the fact that they didn’t meet the requirements that had been set out. Mostly this was the result of the way that the freed slaves were treated. Since Most of the Texas was actually settled after the war ended there is considerably fewer people who take pride in the states Confederate history than there are in the other southern states.

CLIMATE IN TEXAS
The climate in Texas is varied from one area to another; this is to be expected in such a large state. Part of the reason is the huge variety of geography that Texas has. There are coastal regions, mountains, deserts and wide open planes. In addition the state is located where several climate zones meet which also affects the weather. In large part the area that you are located in will determine what the climate will be like.

The coastal regions of Texas have the sort of weather that you would expect to find on any other area around the Gulf of Mexico. In general the weather is mild getting neither particularly hot in the summer nor particularly cold during the winter. There is however a considerable amount of rain in the coastal areas. In addition hurricanes are a not infrequent occurrence in the coastal regions; some of these have been very destructive.

The northern plains region of the panhandle will experience both the coldest and the hottest temperatures in the state. Being furthest away from the water it does not have the regulating effect that occurs in most of the rest of the state. Temperatures frequently fall below freezing during the winter and they can get very hot during the summer. Although there is not a lot of rain in this region thunderstorms are fairly common during the summer. These thunderstorms can produce a great deal of rain in a very short time, they also so times spawn tornados.

West Texas is mostly desert area with little rain and hot temperatures during the summer. It can however get quite cold in the winter. The area also has most of the states mountain areas. In the mountains the climate tends to be more temperate with temperatures being more stable and there being more rain produced. The mountain areas do however tend to be very windy.

Most of central Texas is hill country which has a climate that is similar to the one in the panhandle but not as extreme. The summer tends to be hot and winter quite cool. There are however more rivers and lakes in this area to help regulate the temperature. In addition there are large areas of forest which tends to inhibit the development of thunderstorms so they are not as frequent as in the panhandle, although they do still occur.

As a state Texas has some of the most extreme weather that you will find anywhere in the country. While certain regions have certain climate traits you can get almost any weather anywhere. This was shown in 2004 when a large snow storm fell on the coastal regions. Because of the extremes of weather it is important for the visitor to Texas to be prepared for all kinds of weather since they are likely to happen.

TRANSPORTATION IN TEXAS
Texas is a big state which has meant that they have had to develop an extensive transportation system. This is good news for the visitor in that there is a significant infrastructure so you should not have any trouble getting around. However you should keep in mind that most of the transportation options in Texas are very crowded so there may be delays.

Texas has one of the largest highway systems in the United States and indeed the world. The highways are heavily travelled which does tend to result in lengthy delays, especially on the highways around large urban areas. Most people in Texas get around by driving their own car so there is almost always a great deal of traffic on the roads. The problem is made worse by the fact that public transit in the state is not particularly good. Most of the roads in Texas were built in the fifties and are not really up to handling the amount of traffic that they currently get, which is a big part of why there are so many delays.

Between the fact that most Texans prefer to drive and the fact that the state is well known as one that has low taxes and provides few services it should not come as a surprise to learn that the public transit is considered to be substandard. The major cities for the most part have public transit, although somehow Arlington, right in the middle of the Dallas metropolitan area has no public transit at all. Light rail transit is particularly limited although Houston is currently working on a thirty mile extension to their system.

The state of Texas is well served by air travel. Currently the airport in Dallas is the second largest in the country with the airport in Houston not being far behind. Most cities in Texas have an airport and even a lot of small towns have them as well. Almost all airlines that fly to the United States have flights that go to Texas and there are several regional airlines that offer service within the state.

Most people are surprised to learn that Houston is the busiest port in the United States but that is in fact the case. Texas has several ports and it is one of the major shipping centers for the country. In large part this is to ship the oil and cattle that are produced in Texas.

For the visitor getting around should not be a major issue in Texas. The transportation infrastructure is well developed and except for issues with public transit you should not have a huge problem. Clearly it will be necessary to either drive your own car or to rent one in order to get around but both are easy options and should not present a problem.

=================================
TEXAS CULTURE AND WAY OF LIVING
Texans are extremely proud of the history of their state and of being Texans in general. Most people think of themselves as being Texans first and Americans second. That being said they do tend to be very patriotic citizens of the US. The state has a rather unique history which you will hear about frequently while you are there. You will often hear about the six flags that have flown over Texas and the fact that it was once an independent country. This does tend to gloss over some of the negative parts of the history however, The brief period when Texas was an independent country were amongst the worst in its history for example.

If Texans are proud and boastful they are also a very friendly people. They are well known for their hospitality and they will have no trouble starting a conversation with a stranger. Some visitors may find this to be a little bit worrying as Texans will often talk to you like you’re an old friend even if they have just met you. This is just the way that things are done in Texas and you will get used to it pretty quickly.

Over the years the culture of Texas has gone through a bit of a change mainly due to the massive numbers of Mexicans who have moved into the state. As a result a great deal of Mexican culture is now present. This is obviously most true amongst the immigrant community but even the people who have lived in Texas for generations are starting to pick up on some of this as well.

One thing to keep in mind is that the way that people in Texas live will be affected by where they live. For example the people in Houston or Dallas live a lifestyle that is similar to the way that anybody else who lives in a large city would live. However there are also still people who live and work on ranches or out in oilfields who live a very different lifestyle. Therefore you really can’t make any generalizations about the way that people in Texas live.

One other thing to keep in mind is that Texas also has one of the most uneven distributions of income in the US. There are many people in the state who are very wealthy but also a lot of people who are very poor. Most of the people in the lower income bracket tend to be immigrants, often illegal ones. Unfortunately in Texas there is little government assistance for people who are poor which makes the problem worse. Obviously the people with low incomes live a very different life from those who are very wealthy which again makes it hard to make any generalizations about the way that Texans live.

UNIVERSITIES IN TEXAS
Texas has an excellent and very extensive system of public universities. These are very popular amongst students in large part because students from Texas who meet the standards for acceptance are able to attend school tuition free. Clearly this has resulted in large numbers of students taking advantage of the opportunity which is why the state needs to have such an extensive system of schools. In addition to the public universities there are also a large number of private colleges.

Texas has a very extensive system of universities which makes it somewhat unique compared to how the system works in most other places. There are basically six state universities but each of these has several branches. The result is that there are actually dozens of campuses around the state. The biggest of these is the University of Texas system. They operate fourteen universities throughout the state and combined they have the largest student enrollment by far.

The next university system in Texas is the Texas A&M system. These schools got their name because they started out as the Texas agricultures and mechanical college. This system runs twelve campuses throughout the state making it the second largest system.

The Texas State University was original created in the early twentieth century to train teachers. Over the years however it has expanded to become a full university and it now runs four campuses around the state.

The University of North Texas was founded because of a need to accommodate more students in the Dallas area. There are two campuses that offer undergraduate studies as well as a medical school and a law school.

During the nineteen seventies it started to become clear that there was a need for a new university in Houston so the University of Houston opened in 1977. Today they have four campuses throughout the city and now have one of the largest student enrolments in the state.

Texas Tech was founded in the twenties in order to provide training for engineers however it has since grown to become a full fledged university. There are now thirteen campuses as part of the system which is spread around the state.

In addition to the major university systems that run most of the state schools there are also four independent state schools that operate with state funding but are outside of the systems that were created for the other systems. Texas is widely regarded to have one of the best public university systems in the country with several of its schools ranking near the top of most annual rankings.

Besides the public university system in Texas there are also a large number of private institutions. This includes some of the finest schools in the country like Baylor and Rice universities. There are no shortage of schools in the state so there is plenty of opportunity to get an education in the state of Texas.

FAMOUS TEXANS
There are a lot of well known people who have come from Texas. This will of course come as no surprise given that it is the second most populous state in the union. The number of famous people is made even longer by the rather unique history that the state of Texas has compared to other states.

Given how proud Texans are of their history it will come as no surprise that many of the most famous Texans are the leaders of the revolution that made Texas independent in 1836. The most well known of these is Sam Houston. Admittedly he is best known for the city that was named after him but he was also the first president of the Republic of Texas as well as being the first governor when Texas became a state. Sam Houston is an important figure in the founding of Texas and is well remembered in the state.

Other famous Texans from the early days of the state are the ones who fought at the Alamo during the revolution. The best known of these were Davy Crockett and Jim Bowie. Neither of them actually lived in Texas for a particularly long time and both had actually become famous before they moved to Texas. However since they both died at the Alamo they are largely associated with the state of Texas. Most of the others who died at the Alamo are also well known within the state although they are not as famous as Crockett and Bowie.

Texas has produced a number of presidents, although just how many is not clear. Nobody disputes that Lyndon Johnson was at Texan having been born and raised there. Also not really in dispute is George W. Bush who although born in Connecticut was raised largely in Texas and would serve as governor of the state before becoming president. Where there is debate about presidents who are from Texas is with the senior George Bush. He would not move to Texas until he was an adult but he did work in the oil business in Texas and represented the state in Congress. Even more debatable is Dwight Eisenhower who although born in Texas was largely raised in Kansas, although he did spend some time in Texas while he was in the military.

Texas of course is a huge state with a very large population so it has produced a great many people who have gone onto fame. Many actors, musicians and athletes have come from state as have successful people from other fields. There are lots of places that you can go online and find a comprehensive list of all the famous people from the state. It will take you a considerable amount of time to sort through these lists however as there are a lot of people on them.

TIPS FOR VISITING TEXAS
Texas is a very popular tourist destination and one of the reasons for that it is that it is such an easy place to visit. While there is not a lot that you need to know in order to visit Texas there are a few tips that will help to make your trip more enjoyable.

The biggest tip for visiting Texas is to keep in mind that the state is really big. People of course know that it is the biggest state in the lower forty eight but most people underestimate just how big it truly is. This is something that you have to keep in mind when you are planning your travels, there are long distances between towns and cities. Realistically you are not going to see all of the state so you will be better off choosing a part of it that you would like to visit and sticking to that part.

Another important tip for visiting Texas is that you are going to have to have access to a car. That means you will either need to drive your own or rent one when you get there. In most places you can get away without having one but Texas is not one of those places. Public transit is of a very low quality and as mentioned above things are very spread out. Make sure that you plan to have access to a car while you are in Texas unless the plan is to stay in only one area. Also make sure that you learn the local driving rules, some of them can be pretty interesting.

It is important to realize that the weather in Texas can be variable. In fact you can experience almost any kind of weather imaginable in the state. That means that you are going to have to be prepared for anything. While Texas is generally warm there are parts that get very cold, especially at night. You also have to be prepared for the fact that it rains a lot in certain regions, of course there is very little rain in other areas. The point is that because of the huge size of Texas you may encounter almost any conditions.

Most people who visit Texas tend to do so with a fairly minimal amount of planning. For the most part this is easy to do as the state has a well established infrastructure for tourists. However you will find that if you put a little bit of thought into your trip you will have more fun. There is so much to do in Texas that you won’t be able to do anywhere near all of it. For this reason the best thing to do is to decide on the things that you really want to do but also to leave enough flexibility in your schedule that you can take advantage of any interesting opportunities that come up.

TRAFFIC INFORMATION FOR TEXAS
Traffic is an issue that you are going to have to face whenever you drive, however as a visitor to Texas there may be more of than you are used to. Because of that you are going to want to make sure that you are able to find plenty of traffic information.

If you are going to drive in Texas, and if you are going to visit you will pretty much have to drive, you are going to want to make sure that you stay up to date on traffic information. There are a lot of people in the state and virtually all of them drive everywhere that they go. This is made even worse by the fact that most of the roads were built in the fifties and never intended to get anything close to the amount of traffic that they currently get. As a result traffic jams are commonplace and it can take a long time to get where you are going.

The biggest traffic problems in the state are around the large cities especially Dallas and Houston. The Freeways are the worst areas but you can get a traffic tie up on almost any major road. It is also important to be aware that this can happen at any time of the day. Certainly it happens most frequently at rush hour but there will be plenty of times when there is a traffic jam in the middle of the day. The best way to avoid this is to pay attention to the traffic reports.

The best way to get traffic information for Texas is online. The State has a website that will report on any traffic issues. However most people feel that the sites that are offered by local radio and television stations are more useful since the information will be more up to date. These sites will allow you to enter your route so that you can see what the traffic is like before you set out. If the traffic is heavy on the route that you plan to take the site may offer you an alternative route if one exists.

Of course the traffic situation can change while you are driving so you will want to stay on top of this as well. The best way to do this would be to use a wireless device that allows you to look at the websites that show you how much traffic there is. However this is dangerous if you are driving so you don’t want to do that. If there is somebody else in the car who can look at these things for you while you drive that would be a good option. Otherwise you are going to have to rely on the radio to provide you with traffic information, they are pretty good about doing this because traffic is such an issue throughout the state.

Private orthodontic care is available to all ages, it is never too late!

Appliances available for private patients

Fixed cosmetic brackets

Cosmetic braces consist of transparent brackets and provide a less obvious alternative to metal braces. They provide the same great results as metal braces and are one of our most affordable, less visible treatments, making them a popular choice for adults.

We use ‘Radiance’ brackets which are crystal clear, not cloudy like some ceramic brackets, this allows the natural color of the tooth to come through and make the braces almost disappear on your teeth.

Invisalign

We use Invisalign to treat a variety of mild orthodontic problems. Clear aligners such as Invisalign® use a series of custom-made removable plastic aligners to gradually move your teeth into the correct position. Each aligner is worn for about two weeks, day and night, and should only be removed for eating, brushing and contact sports.

Clear aligners

Clear aligners have no metal wires or brackets and as they are removable you’ll be able to brush and floss your teeth as normal throughout your treatment. Clear aligners aren’t suitable for everyone though. We will be happy to discuss the different options available to you during your consultation.

Retainers

Once the active phase of your treatment has been finished and braces removed, it will be necessary to wear a retainer. Retainers are designed to keep your teeth straight and can either be removable or fixed to the teeth. Now that your teeth are straight, if you do not wear your retainer your teeth are likely to drift towards their original positions.

The benefits of private orthodontic treatment for children:

Immediate treatment with no waiting time.

Flexible appointment times, which includes outside school hours and during school holidays, to minimize disruption to your lifestyle.

Private patients benefit from a wider range of appliances.

You will be seen more frequently allowing the treatment to proceed more rapidly.

Affordable payment plans are available to help you spread the cost of your private treatment over a number of months.

The use of long-term retainers to ensure you maintain your beautiful smile.

Invisalign for narrow dental arch

Dental problems, such as a narrow arch, can cause oral health issues down the road. A dental arch is the distance of the line where the teeth are set into the upper and lower jaws. When the dental arch is too narrow, it can cause overlapping over the teeth or misaligned teeth. It can be hard to practice good oral hygiene with these problems because plaque can get caught in the tight spaces, making it difficult to remove.

The Invisalign system improves the arch to make room for the teeth. It leaves the patient with a new and improved smile. It also improves overall oral health, because it will be easier to brush and floss away plaque on and in between the teeth. Each and every dental case is unique.

To get started, our dentist will map out a specific plan to fit your dental needs. You will be given Invisalign’s plastic aligner trays, which are worn over the teeth. When it comes to a narrow arch, the teeth can protrude because of crowding. You can have this corrected with Invisalign’s plastic aligner trays, which gently shift the teeth into the correct place.

The trays are to be replaced every two weeks, since the teeth are constantly shifting into their new position. You will have peace of mind knowing that your teeth are being improved everyday as you wear the plastic trays. The best part is they are virtually invisible.

Invisalign truly works to improve a smile. It not only corrects cosmetic issues, it also fixes oral health issues associated with dental problems. Avoid periodontal disease, tooth decay, plaque buildup and other problems when you use Invisalign.

With traditional braces, you have to worry about eating certain foods such as nuts, hard breads, hard candies, and gum. With the Invisalign treatment, you can eat whatever you want because the trays are removable. You will see a great improvement in your smile by the end of the process that will leave you with the confidence you need.\

Invisalign for an overjet

When a patient’s lower teeth are too far behind the upper front teeth, they have an overjet. There are many factors that cause an overjet, including a skeletal imbalance of the upper and lower jaw, bad oral habits, and missing lower teeth. Thumb sucking and tongue thrusting can also make an overjet worse. But there is a solution to correcting this problem without the use of braces. Invisalign is a more convenient and comfortable way to correct many dental issues.

This is a treatment that uses plastic aligners that fit right over the teeth. They are customized to each individual as each patient has a unique set of issues. Once a plan is in place for the patient, the trays are made to fit the patient. The results after treatment can be dramatic. There is always a great improvement in the smile of each person.

The plastic aligners are removable and virtually invisible at first glance. They should be worn for most of the day and should be taken out when eating, flossing and brushing. The best part is that patients have the freedom to eat whatever they want since the trays are removable, unlike braces where certain enjoyable foods have to be avoided.

An overjet or an overbite can lead to a few dental issues. It can wear down the lower teeth and cause pain in the jaw. With Invisalign, the teeth and jaw alignment will slowly shift into place over time. It is important that the patient maintains good oral care during and after treatment. Your smile will thank you.

Invisalign is also painless. With braces, the gums and inside of the mouth can become very sore, especially after adjustments. This leads to discomfort while eating, and some feel the wires and brackets are unattractive when they smile. That is why Invisalign tackles your cosmetic and overall oral health concerns. For example, an overjet will be corrected when the teeth shift. But since they shift gradually, there is no pain. The plastic aligners that go over the teeth are very comfortable.

Invisalign is often called “clear braces” because it moves teeth in much the same way braces do, but is clear and discreet without the bulky metal look. Invisalign can be used in patients whose jaws have finished growing, which means that it can be a good option for most teens and adults. Our Invisalign dentist can help you decide if it is right for you.

Invisalign is versatile enough to be used to treat most of the same problems braces do, including overbites, underbites, crossbites, crowding, spacing, and crooked teeth. It is especially useful for mild and moderate cases, and can even be used for some of the more complex cases. Although Invisalign is not a one-size-fits-all solution, our Invisalign dentist customizes the treatment right from the beginning with an individualized treatment plan for each stage of treatment.

During treatment, you will be able to remove your clear aligners when you eat and drink, which means that you will not need to change your diet during treatment. You will also be able to brush and floss as normal before putting your aligners back into place after eating. This eliminates the need for special tools. Every two weeks, you will move to the next set of aligners according to the treatment plan, reducing chair time and often speeding results. Our Invisalign dentist will explain how many aligners you will need at the beginning of your treatment, and that number will determine how long your treatment will last. Most people will wear their aligners for 12 to 18 months. However, some use Invisalign for as few as 6 months, while others have treatment that lasts longer than 18 months.

Our Invisalign dentist will work to find the Invisalign solution for you. We offer personalized Invisalign treatments that include Invisalign Teen, Invisalign Express, and Invisalign Full. Our team works with you to maximize your insurance benefits and find the financing solutions that work best with your budget.

Call our office today to learn more about how Invisalign can straighten your smile or to schedule your appointment with our Invisalign dentist.

Another Invisalign Option

Invisalign Express is a fast, effective way to correct minor orthodontic problems, such as orthodontic relapse, or to prepare your teeth for a smile makeover. Our Invisalign Express expert can use this fast, effective treatment  in a variety of ways to straighten teeth before cosmetic procedures or restorative procedures, or to improve minor crowding or spacing issues. Most patients complete treatment in about six months rather than 12 to 18 months typical of Invisalign Full, and with just 10 stages of aligners rather than 20 to 30.

Our Invisalign Express expert may determine that you are a candidate for Invisalign Express if you:

•    Need fewer than 1.5 millimeters of expansion in each arch

•    Need fewer than two millimeters of midline correction

•    Have minimal rotation of your incisors, cuspids, and bicuspids

•    Have minimal crowding or spacing

Occasionally, you may need manicuring, or interproximal reduction, to create space between the teeth. Attachments may also need to be placed to ensure a better fit for the aligners.

As with other types of Invisalign treatment, the treatment plan is created before treatment begins. After your consultation, our Invisalign Express expert will take images, impressions, and other records of your teeth. These will be digitized to create a 3D model and map the planned tooth movements throughout the treatment. These movements will form the basis of the treatment plan and will be used to create the custom aligners.

Once the aligners are made, you will wear them from twenty to twenty-two hours a day just like you would wear conventional Invisalign. You can take the aligners out to eat or to clean your teeth or for special occasions. Every two weeks, you will switch to the next aligners in the set.

Treatment costs are generally lower for Invisalign Express because it is faster, but each patient’s treatment needs are individual and can vary based on several factors. Our Invisalign Express expert can help you determine the cost and other treatment considerations. Invisalign Express can be used alone or can be combined with other treatments such as teeth whitening, dental veneers, or other cosmetic treatments to create a smile makeover.

Often, patients who might value improving their smile aren’t aware that there is an alternative to the metal braces that would detract from their appearance. Thankfully, a modern alternative to traditional braces exists that is nearly invisible to the human eye. It’s called Invisalign. Invisalign has helped thousands of people achieve their dream of a beautiful smile.

Patients often ask the following questions about Invisalign:

Is Invisalign really effective?

Research studies and orthodontic practices nationwide have proven Invisalign’s effectiveness in straightening teeth.

What are the “aligners” Invisalign uses, and what are they made of?

The aligners are clear plastic trays (made of durable, medical-grade plastic) that are shaped especially for your mouth. Invisalign trays are almost completely unnoticeable. The aligners are used to gradually position teeth properly.

How much does Invisalign Cost?

Traditional braces and Invisalign cost about the same. These costs vary based on how extensive orthodontic treatment needs to be. Cost is generally correlated to the number of aligners necessary for correction.

Will dental insurance cover Invisalign?

Since coverage varies from person to person, it’s important to examine your policy and work closely with your dentist’s office to determine if Invisalign is a covered benefit. Typically, if you have orthodontic coverage, this should cover Invisalign, but again, policies do vary.

Are Invisalign aligners painful?

The initial days of the Invisalign treatment seem to cause patients the most discomfort, as with traditional braces. Your teeth are actually moving into an altered position, and this is the source of your pain. As your teeth start settling into their new position, your pain should stop.

How does Invisalign adjust the position of your teeth?

Unlike traditional braces, Invisalign does not pull the teeth. Instead the aligners press teeth into proper position. These movements are central to your treatment; aligners must be worn at least 22 hours per day to be effective and should only be taken out briefly for special occasions or to eat, drink and brush your teeth.

Why should I choose Invisalign?

Key benefits of Invisalign include:

· Appearance — Invisalign’s much less obvious appearance, of course

· Removability — The ability to take out the aligners for special occasions, or while eating and drinking or brushing your teeth

· Comfort — Invisalign’s high comfort level because no sharp edges are present to irritate the inside of your mouth

· Fewer dental visits — A reduced number of dental visits since Invisalign doesn’t need frequent adjusting like traditional braces

With costs comparable to traditional braces, Invisalign is rapidly become the solution of choice for many dental patients.

During orthodontic treatment, Invisalign aligners use controlled forces to gradually move your teeth. The pressure is applied to the crowns, or the tops of the teeth. The periodontal ligament and bone gradually adjust to accommodate the new position of the tooth. After orthodontic treatment, the teeth could relapse to their previous positions, which is why wearing a retainer is so important. Our Invisalign retainer expert may recommend wearing an Invisalign retainer.

Invisalign retainers work similarly to other retainers: by holding the teeth in their proper positions. Regardless of the type of orthodontic treatment you have had, you will need to wear a retainer. Initially, our Invisalign retainer expert may recommend that you wear your retainer from 12 to 22 hours a day. This will depend on your age and other factors. Over time, you will be able to decrease your wear time to night only. Eventually, you may only need to wear your retainer a few times a week to ensure your teeth are staying where they need to be. This is because teeth can continue to shift and change position throughout your life, and wearing your retainer periodically can help them stay straight and healthy.

If you are a candidate, our Invisalign retainer expert will take a dental impression of your teeth. This will be used much like the impressions we took at the initiation of your Invisalign treatment to make a 3D model of your teeth and your retainer. The retainer will fit your teeth precisely. Unlike your aligners, your retainer will not apply pressure to your teeth but will rather hold them in their final position.

You can take your retainer out when you eat, drink, and when you brush or floss. You may also take it out for special occasions or as advised by our team. Clean your retainers regularly as recommended to keep it fresh and stain-free and to keep your teeth and gums healthy. You may periodically need new retainers. Call us today to learn more about using Invisalign retainer or to schedule your consultation with our Invisalign retainer expert.

Braces were once a rite of passage for many teens, but teens today often have an alternative: Invisalign. Invisalign is a special type of orthodontic treatment that straightens teeth without metal, brackets, or bands. Instead, it uses clear aligners made of sturdy thermoplastic that are molded to fit teeth at each stage of treatment. Our Invisalign Teen expert can help you decide if this treatment is right for your teen.

Our Invisalign Teen expert may recommend Invisalign Teen if your teen has:

•    Crooked teeth

•    Gapped teeth

•    Crowded teeth

•    A Crossbite,

•    Overbite,

•    Or underbite

Invisalign Teen uses the same custom-made clear aligners as the FDA-approved, clinically proven Invisalign system and was developed to address the unique needs of teens. The treatment begins with a complete orthodontic evaluation. Our Invisalign Teen expert will take a series of dental X-rays and other records and images that are used to create a 3D model of your teen’s smile. This model forms the basis of the treatment plan, and each tooth’s position is carefully adjusted and mapped. The aligners will be made based on these tooth movements, and your teen can start treatment as soon as his aligners are ready.

Your teen will need to wear their aligners between 20 and 22 hours a day. They are able to remove them for meals, which allows them to continue eating their favorite foods with their friends. Before putting the aligners back in, they will need to brush and floss their teeth thoroughly. This helps keep their teeth and gums strong and healthy throughout treatment. The aligners feature special Blue Dot indicators that help your teen keep track of wear time. The Blue Dots fade when it is time to change to the next set of aligners.

Invisalign Teen also features eruption tabs. These tabs allow the aligners to grow along with your teen. The eruption tabs allow the aligners to accommodate the changes in your teen’s jaw so that her treatment plan can stay right on track as their teeth grow or wisdom teeth come in. Regular checkups with our Invisalign Teen expert will be needed to monitor your teen’s progress.

Call us today to find out more about Invisalign Teen and your teen’s candidacy or to schedule your consultation with our Invisalign Teen expert.

Since everyone responds positively to a friendly face, you can imagine how people perceive you if you keep your smile hidden. A beautiful smile can make all the difference about how you feel about yourself. Take the important step and consult a dentist about getting your teeth straightened.

Fear not, having braces is a very different experience than it was years ago. First of all, braces no longer have to be those ugly “metal mouth” contraptions. Invisalign is the new breakthrough, invisible solution available today that makes the whole teeth alignment process easier and more attractive. With Invisalign, there are no wires and brackets, which are painful and hard to clean. With this remarkable procedure, using clear braces, the apparatus is virtually unseen.

The dentist uses a series of clear removable aligners, and the teeth move predicatively, resulting in straight teeth and a beautiful smile in less time than with the old traditional metal braces. Invisalign is easier because they are removable, so you can brush, floss, and eat the way you always have; therefore, maintaining good oral hygiene.

As you can imagine, the invisible braces are a huge hit with teens, as well as adults. The ease and comfort are a plus, and, after all, who isn’t concerned with their looks. The professional will appreciate the clear braces advantage of Invisalign as they are not a distraction in business dealings.

Straight teeth offer health advantages too because they are easier to clean, thus aiding in the prevention of gingivitis and periodontal disease. Secondly, the dental offices today are quite different. Offices provide a professional, personalized care in a spa-like environment. You will find ergonomic chairs and televisions in each room, along with noise canceling head phones. The dentists and staff are an important element in any ongoing treatment, so it is important to locate a dentist who combines knowledge, experience, and care to treat each patient with art, science, and modern technology to insure that beautiful, healthy smile.

Our office is such a cosmetic and general dental practice. Our dentists work as a team, so each individual can realize his or her perfect smile. It is important to look and feel as good as you can. A healthy and beautiful smile is a part of the whole picture that is you. Crooked, discolored teeth are an impediment to your health and confidence and can influence the way others see you. You want to look into the mirror and love the look of the person you see. Smile back!

Most people dread going to the dentist. But if you are looking for Invisalign then you must make sure that you find a good Invisalign dentist; that will mean half the job is done. Beware of those orthodontists that tell you to come back some other time or are not available when you most need one. If he is professional and thorough, your Invisalign treatment should be successful.  You must ensure that you choose a good Invisalign dentist or you might find yourself hunting for a new orthodontist when you are halfway through the Invisalign treatment. It really helps if the dentist is caring; going for checkups is not so difficult then.

If you are looking to enhance your self-confidence, Invisalign can help you get that beautiful smile by making use of aligners or Invisalign molds in your mouth. Try your best to keep the aligners where they belong – in your mouth! Since these Invisalign aligners are removable, most patients think they can remove them as and when they like. A lot of patients who take them out only prolong their treatment as their teeth go back to their original state. For Invisalign treatment to be short and less painful, make sure you keep the aligners in long enough; your Invisalign dentist would recommend 20 hours each day.

Invisalign aligners have kind of buttons that are attached to the teeth at the back or sides and then to the aligners. However, sometimes they might be attached to one of your front teeth which make it a wee bit visible. It does not look all that bad but you might want to discuss this with your Invisalign dentist before you decide to go in for the Invisalign treatment.

Make sure you brush your teeth as well as your Invisalign aligners regularly. Your Invisalign dentist will confirm that just like you teeth, your aligners too can get a lot of plaque built up on them. Excess plaque can even make your aligners visible. You do not necessarily have to invest in expensive Invisalign cleaning tool kits. Even a regular denture cleaning product will do just as good a job when it comes to cleaning your aligners.

You have to be patient with your Invisalign treatment. Don’t expect things to change overnight. It can take awfully long depending on how badly your teeth are misaligned and if you are impatient it can take even longer. So stick with it and keep your aligners in your mouth as long as you are supposed to keep themin. Invisalign treatment can give you great results when you make good use of it with a good Invisalign dentist. So make sure you keep all these points in mind when you decide to go in for Invisalign treatment.

If you want to know more about Invisalign treatment, visit us; a well-qualified and professional Invisalign dentist with a lot of experience will tell you all you need to know.

All About InvisalignIn

In the past, metal braces were used to straighten crooked teeth and close gaps between teeth. With advancing technology comes new methods and ways to correct misaligned teeth. Nowadays Invisalign has surfaced as the most preferred alternative.

Invisalign aligners consist of plastic, clear and removable materials that are subjected to custom built procedure to correct teeth alignment problem. It relies on computer aided technology particularly three dimensional modeling to produce well calibrated aligners for patient’s treatment procedure which is carried out in 2-week increments.

The design process of Invisalign aligners with the aid of an orthodontist involves the repositioning of your teeth in a step by step pace until the desired position is achieved. It also allows you to examine your entire treatment plan including the progress of your teeth alignment after the treatment stage.

Invisalign aligners are removable thus they can be taken out when the need arises like eating, brushing and flossing. With Invisalign, you can address the proper alignment of your teeth and be able to have the smile you’ve always wanted without the need for traditional metal-wire braces, brackets or bands that have long been used in conventional orthodontic practice.

Do You Need Invisalign?

If you are frightened by metal braces, brackets or wires, the way to go is Invisalign technology. Through the use of a series of invisible and aligning trays customized for your teeth, it will allow you to have that perfect smile sooner than what you expect if you undergo the traditional braces or brackets. If you value comfort and you are concerned with being branded as “metal mouth”, by all means, Invisalign is an option you can take. However, technology is just 50% of the battle. The other half belongs to you. You have to find the right orthodontist that can do the job well. If he lacks the expertise, experience or qualifications to transform your smile perfectly, then better find another one.

Pros Of Invisalign

Aligners are virtually invisible, discreet and removable

Absence of mouth abrasion causing wires, metals or brackets – it is designed with utmost comfort in mind.

Aligners are removable thus they can be set aside when eating, brushing or flossing

Viewing of the virtual treatment plan is possible thus allowing you to visualize the final outcome of your teeth alignment. You can even effect alternation on the expected outcome.

Treatment Procedure For Invisalign Treatment and Cost Requirement

The application of treatments differs for the period of 6 months to one year. Sometimes, the cost requirement could be 20 to 50 percent higher than the cost of common methods. In most cases, the cost is relatively equal to conventional braces. The final cost of treatment depends on several factors like the extent of the repositioning work to undertake and the number of aligners to produce.

Comparison Between Invisalign and Metal Braces

In all honesty, Invisalign is the present and the future. Although the use of braces proves to be noteworthy, leaning towards Invisalign appears to be the better option. You can already strike out the time to be spent with your orthodontist for brace maintenance. With Invisalign technology, you are properly guided all through out the procedure.

Do you dislike the look of traditional braces but want straight teeth? The Invisalign system is the answer you are looking for. Call us for a consultation.

While all certified Invisalign providers can provide Invisalign Teen, we have a substantial amount of experience working with teens and Invisalign overall. As a certified Invisalign Teen provider, we can maximize the success of your treatment and help you get the smile you deserve.

What is Invisalign Teen?

Invisalign Teen is the most popular option for teenagers who need to straighten their teeth. We can eliminate the need of conventional braces while retaining the benefits of proper orthodontic treatment with Invisalign Teen. The process is very similar to Invisalign except for a few features designed to maximize the success of the treatment.

Features of Invisalign Teen

Invisalign Teen has “compliance indicators,” or blue tabs that fade with wear. These tabs help the doctor and parents monitor adequate wear time and it’s also an effective way for teenagers to track their own progress. Our certified Invisalign Teen providers can explain the details of this feature during a consultation.

Benefits of Invisalign Teen

We understand the problems teens face with conventional braces. No one needs to know you’re wearing braces and with the invisible aligners, no one will. Invisalign Teen allows you to make memories without the intrusion of braces. Your smile will be the focus of your school photos, prom pictures and even selfies — not metal brackets and wires. Since Invisalign Teen is completely removable, you can eat whatever you want and still brush and floss your teeth easily. If you’re involved in sports, music or other extracurriculars, you won’t have a mouthful of metal get in the way of your activities.

High Success with Invisalign Teen

Parents often worry that their teens aren’t responsible enough to wear their aligners as frequently as necessary, but in reality, teens are sometimes more compliant than adult patients. They’re motivated to wear their aligners as directed to avoid traditional braces. It’s common for teen patients to adhere to their treatment plans as much as, if not more than, other patients. Treatment times vary with teen patients — schedule your consultation today to determine your specific case.

Whether it’s a vacation or business trip (we hope it’s a vacation), traveling will definitely alter your Invisalign routine. Here are a few tips to keep top of mind when preparing for your excursion.

Travel Tips

Always take your previous set, your current set and your next set with you. That way, if you lose or break a tray, you can always fall back to the previous set.

Carry your aligners in your purse or carry-on luggage when flying, in case baggage is delayed or lost.

Pack an extra case. If you leave one behind in a hotel or restaurant, you’ll have a spare.

Bring a travel toothbrush and floss picks. (Ask the front desk at your hotel for a travel toothbrush and toothpaste — they’ll usually provide it for free.)

Keep a bottle of water handy. Rinsing your mouth and trays with it when you need to, plus staying hydrated is always a must.

Keep a travel-sized bottle of hand sanitizer on you and use it on your hands before removing or reinserting your aligners.

Airplane Advice

As if catching a flight wasn’t already a stressful task, consider the length of the flight and how comfortable you would letting a stranger watch you take your aligners in and out of your mouth. Make sure to get an aisle seat if you can, since you’ll probably want to head to the restroom before and after meals. You can also eat something before you get on the plane, so that in-flight snacks aren’t too tempting. Don’t forget your case if you’re brushing your teeth in restrooms! At the very least, grab some paper towels to rest your aligners on to reduce the amount of germs that come into contact with your aligners.

Let us know if you have any Invisalign travel tips that we haven’t included and have a safe trip!

Invisalign and Invisalign Teen

If you’re looking for an unobtrusive way to straighten your teeth but don’t want the embarrassment of a metal braces… invisible braces known as ‘Invisalign’ braces, may be the solution. The braces are made from a special type of plastic that gradually moves your teeth into the proper positioning. With these new invisible braces, no one but you and your orthodontist will know you’re straightening your teeth.

Invisalign is a new, improved method for straightening teeth. Unlike traditional metal braces, it is made from a special thermoplastic material that’s clear. No one knows that you’re straightening your teeth because the system is completely invisible.

The system is similar to tooth whitening trays. Each aligner is meant to be worn for two weeks and then swapped out for a different one. The aligner trays slowly move the teeth into the desired position a little at a time. The movement is gradual and the number of aligners in full treatment will depend upon the severity of the problem.  A typical full treatment is anywhere from 20-30 trays with full results in six months to a year.

The aligner trays are free of the material Bisphenol-A. BPA has been in the news lately as a possible cancer-causing agent that’s been banned from baby bottles in Canada. With Invisalign, you won’t have to worry about BPA.

Who Benefits From Invisalign?

Invisalign is for anyone who’s interested in straightening his or her teeth. The system is different than traditional braces so it’s a perfect solution for anyone who’s uncomfortable with metal braces. It’s a perfect solution to professional adults whose teeth have reverted after traditional metal braces or who never received braces as a child. With the invisible aligner trays, no one needs to know you’re straightening your teeth.

The system can fix overcrowded or widely spaced teeth, a crossbite, overbite or underbite. The results aren’t just cosmetic – if some of these issues aren’t corrected, dental decay and periodontal disease can occur.

Aside from the invisibility, one of the biggest benefits the system has is that it can be easily removed. The aligner trays are meant to be taken out during meals and while brushing and flossing. With the system, it’s easy to keep your teeth and gums healthy.

How To Choose A Invisalign Orthodontist

Once you’ve decided to look into Invisalign, the next step is choosing an orthodontist.. An orthodontist who is experienced in braces, straightening teeth, and experienced in invisible braces is a must. Orthodontists must go through special training sessions before they are able to offer Invisalign services to their patients and we have treated hundreds of Invisalign patients.

After finding an orthodontist, it’s important to check and see if they’re able to accept any dental insurance you have. It’s up to the individual dental plans to cover orthodontic work, so you’ll need to check with your plan’s provider. If your plan doesn’t cover orthodontics, we will be happy to work out a reasonable payment plan that works with your budget. If you have a flexible spending account through work, you can usually use it to cover orthodontia.

It’s also a good idea to find an orthodontic office close to either your home or work and that offers convenient hours. Though the Invisalign system doesn’t require a lot of time in the treatment chair, you will need to visit every six – eight weeks or so. By finding an office that’s conveniently located and offers extended or weekend hours, you’ll save yourself a lot of travel time.

After seeing the difference the aligner trays can make straightening your teeth, you’ll wonder why you didn’t choose to wear Invisalign sooner.

Why Should You Care?

Why should you care about orthodontics? Well to begin with, looks are important. You want to be able to smile with confidence. Straight teeth help a lot. It’ll boost your self-esteem (which has been proven in medical studies). You’ll be the best person in your Christmas and school photos, and overall, you will just look awesome. So orthodontics matter! I’d suggest braces.

Medical Benefits of Dental Braces

Problems You May Face:

Grinding your teeth – straight teeth won’t wear against each other

Overbite and Underbite – besides appearances, this will often lead to problems at older ages

Painful problems when you’re older

You can prevent all of these simply by straightening your teeth with braces. Also your teeth are:

Easier to clean – straight teeth are much easier to brush and clean

And you can smile confidently with straighter teeth

History of Dental Braces

That’s where braces and retainers come in. They may look scary, but they’ve come a long way. A few decades ago, the metal wires were literally hammered – hammered! – onto your teeth. The orthodontist would take a mallet and hit the metal into place within your mouth. Unbelievable!

We’re past that now, so don’t worry! But let’s see how it’s really done . . .

The Actual Procedure for Braces

More often than not, your first step in getting braces on that fateful day will be photos of you smiling, and/or impressions. Those impressions are taken by biting into a mold (not the fungi).

The orthodontist will have you open your mouth and will insert a not uncomfortable, piece of plastic that fits over parts of your lips. This is known as a cheek retractor. Its purpose is to keep your mouth open wide enough that the orthodontist can see, and later fit inside a tool that dries the glue linking your teeth and brackets. It also helps keeping your teeth dry.

Your teeth will be polished, similar to what is done at a dentist.

This next step may sound uncomfortable, but isn’t. The orthodontist will choose either your upper or lower teeth (normally lower first). They will dry out all the saliva with a suction tool you have almost definitely seen before at the dentist.

Once that’s done, the orthodontist will place each bracket, with glue on the back, against your teeth. Immediately after, it will be adjusted and excess glue removed. Then the orthodontist will move onto the next tooth. This continues until all the teeth on either the lower or upper level of the mouth are done.

Note: the orthodontist will likely pause after finishing each side, to dry out the other side of the mouth.

After all the teeth of one row are done, the orthodontist will use a high-powered light to solidify the glue.

There may or may not be a pause in between the application of brackets to your upper and lower teeth. However there will definitely be a pause for you to brush after they solidify the glue for the final time.

Once your teeth are brushed, the orthodontist may or may not give you a week or so to get used to the presence of brackets on your teeth before installing the wire. In my experience, it happened on the same day, but I’ve encountered other procedures in my research.

After the brackets are on, your orthodontist will give you a speech on how to brush, what to and what not to eat, etc..

Dr. Edward H. Angle, the ‘father’ of orthodontics, devised the Classification of Malocclusion (bad bite) more than 100 years ago.

It describes how the upper teeth fit with the lower teeth when viewed from the side.

In Class I, the teeth fit properly.

In Class II, all of the upper teeth are forward relative to the lower teeth.

In Class III, all of the upper teeth are backward relative to the lower teeth.

These terms describe how the front teeth fit:

Overbite – there is too much overlap of the upper front teeth.

Overjet – the front teeth overlap too much in the horizontal plane (they protrude).

Openbite – there is no contact between the upper and lower front teeth (an opening exists even when the patient is biting).

Crowding – a very common problem, is not just unsightly; it also makes brushing and flossing teeth more difficult.

Spacing – this condition is quite a difficult problem to solve, because muscles contribute to the condition.

Many of the problems we correct have a skeletal basis. Typical skeletal class II and skeletal class III patients show distinct differences in facial appearance. Correcting this condition involves reestablishing a balance between the jaws, which will correct the fit of the teeth and help to achieve the best facial appearance. Early treatment is critically important to successful correction.

Very few people have upper and lower jaws of exactly the same width. Often, the upper jaw is a little wider. This imbalance is not a problem unless the deficiency is pronounced enough for the upper teeth to fit inside the lower. This imbalance can lead to crowding, mouth breathing and other maladies such as openbite, allergies and even a greater susceptibility to the common cold. To improve general health, chewing and tooth alignment, crossbites should be corrected as soon as they become apparent.

TMJ describes a collection of symptoms such as jaws locking, headaches, neck and upper back pain, grinding the teeth (bruxism) or clenching. Noises that seem to come from the jaw such as clicking, popping or ringing in the ears often are associated with TMJ problems, but these alone do not make clinical intervention necessary after these TMJ problems are aggravated by a bad bite.

Healthy teeth can be moved at almost any age, but until just a few decades ago, most adults weren’t likely to seek treatment.

Even today, many parents don’t consider taking a child to an orthodontist until all permanent teeth have developed, only to find that treatment would have been much easier if started earlier.

Many common orthodontic problems are easier to correct before jaw growth has slowed, so it’s good practice for every child to have a check-up with an orthodontic specialist no later than age 9, when enough permanent teeth have arrived to permit an evaluation of relationships developing between the teeth, jaws and face.

We can then identify any potential problems and, if necessary, discuss the appropriate time for treatment to begin. Often, our recommendation is to ‘wait and see’ while the face and jaws continue to grow, but 25% of children do require early intervention in order to correct functional bite problems.

We now know that many orthodontic problems are better treated earlier in childhood by utilizing the growth that takes place in younger children. Although we may not begin treatment at the young age of 7, we may elect to monitor your child’s dental development. Early detection greatly reduces the need for removal of permanent teeth and can lead to simple, more effective treatment and greater peace of mind.

Benefits of Early Treatment:

Influence jaw growth in a positive manner

Harmonize width of the dental arches

Improve eruption patterns

Reduce risk of trauma to protruding upper incisors

Simplify and shorten treatment time for later orthodontic procedures

Improve aesthetics and self-esteem

Reduce likelihood of impacted permanent teeth

Correct harmful oral habits

Preserve or gain space for erupting teeth

Adolescent Treatment

In most cases, the ideal age for braces, and other orthodontic treatment, is between 10 and 14 years of age. By this time, all of the permanent teeth have erupted. Moving and correcting the alignment of the teeth follows the same biological and physical process regardless of age.

These days, there’s a wide variety of braces from which to choose. Advanced orthodontic technology allows us to offer a variety of more aesthetic approaches to orthodontics. Today’s braces are more cosmetically pleasing and more comfortable than appliances of the past. You can choose between clear and silver braces, or even invisible aligners such as Invisalign®.

Self-ligating brackets are gaining a reputation for producing a faster and more efficient end result than traditional braces. The combination of these brackets and high-tech orthodontic wires produces better, more reliable results in fewer visits. This metal twin bracket uses a special built-in clip that places gentle pressure on the orthodontic wire to move the teeth.Together, you and our team can achieve the healthy, beautiful smile you deserve, quickly and in the most efficient manner.

Clear ceramic (porcelain) braces are becoming a popular option among our patients as well. Clear braces are much less visible than other types of brackets, especially when coupled with white wires, but they also are less durable, which means that treatment can take a little longer. The wires’ Teflon coating means that they only can be used at certain times during treatment. If you’re a bit concerned about the appearance of braces, by all means ask about this option when you visit us.

Traditional metal braces are the first choice for most patients. These braces usually are the most durable and tend to move the teeth most efficiently, resulting in shorter treatment time. Metal braces are now available in a miniature variety in order to provide a more aesthetically pleasing option to patients.

Lingual braces are fixed almost invisibly to the inside of the teeth. However, these braces are only suitable for certain specific problems. Because of the technical difficulty of fitting, they’re more expensive than other types of braces.

Invisalign® is another exciting new development in orthodontic technology. These invisible appliances are clear plastic aligners, which are replaced every two weeks. And unlike braces, these clear aligners can be removed while you eat, brush and floss. Since Invisalign is practically invisible, there’s no unwarranted attention to your mouth. In fact, very few people will notice at all–unless you tell them. Although more expensive, this new technology allows you to achieve that beautiful new smile without wearing traditional braces.

Elastics are the little rubber rings that attach the wire that helps align the teeth to the braces. These elastics come in a choice of colors, which makes them very popular with younger patients, who often choose their favorite football club or school colors. The rubber elastics are normally changed every few months, so enjoying a different color each time you come in to visit us is no problem.

Gold braces are becoming increasingly popular. These fashionable gold-plated braces are considered as ‘jewelry for the teeth’.

Define orthodontics.

A specialty of dentistry concerning the correction of misalignment jaws and/or dentition.

When should an individual visit an orthodontist?

As soon as he/she suspects a problem with the alignment of his/her jaw and/or teeth.

When should orthodontic treatment be initiated?

When an orthodontic treatment can be completed in the most efficient and effective manner.

What is an orthodontist?

A Board Certified Orthodontist who received his/her certificate in Orthodontics. An orthodontist is a dentist who received an additional 2-3 year education in an accredited university orthodontic program. Only dentists with this education qualify for membership in the American Association of Orthodontists and are eligible take the strenuous testing process to become Board Certified by American Board of Orthodontics.

You want to choose an orthodontist who you believe will provide you with excellent care in a friendly environment.

Why do individuals seek orthodontic treatment?

Most people seek orthodontic care because they do not like misalignment of their jaws or teeth. These concerns are related to an individuals’ facial features and may create self-esteem issues. People who feel they look good, feel good. If they feel good, they do better.

At what age should a child have an orthodontic consultation?

The American Association Orthodontists suggest children visit an orthodontist as early as age 7. It is important to provide treatment in the most effective and efficient manner and those who are not ready for treatment will be periodically re-examined.

Do Adults qualify for orthodontic treatment?

Yes. A significant percentage of orthodontic patients are adults. Invisible and tooth color braces are available.

How long do I to have braces?

Most orthodontic treatments take 18-24 months. However, there are those who require less or more treatment time.

How long do I have to wear my retainers?

Maintaining an orthodontic result is very important. Our orthodontic practice suggests a life long retention program.

Are there instructions on how to take care of my braces?

Once the braces are placed, we will provide you with eating, brushing, and treatment instructions.

Why are my friends being treated in two phases? Do I have to have braces twice?

There was a period of time when most orthodontists believed that early treatment (Phase I) enhanced the comprehensive phase (Phase II) of orthodontic treatment. Evidence based research has concluded, with few exceptions, comparable results can be obtained with one comprehensive treatment. The initial phase of a two phase treatment contributes little, if any, to an orthodontic result. The experience of our orthodontic practice concurs with these conclusions.

In addition to the answer to the previous question, what are benefits of performing one comprehensive orthodontic treatment?

One comprehensive orthodontic treatment is the most efficient and effective method of treatment. In most instances, the duration of treatment is significantly shorter, there are fewer appointments, you do not have to experience unnecessary treatment, and the risks associated with orthodontic treatment are reduced. Also, the expense of a two phase treatment is more costly.

Are there situations when early treatment is appropriate?

There are always rare exceptions to the rules. Interceptive orthodontics can be performed when an orthodontist believes he/she may be able to intercept an orthodontic problem with the intent of eliminating the need for additional treatment. There may be an instance, when it is necessary to perform limited orthodontic treatment to address concerns that require immediate actions.

Braces for All Ages

Adults. If you’re worried that you’re too old for treatment, consider this: our oldest patient is 83! Orthodontic care can help you overcome problems you may have battled with your entire life, such as a gummy smile, wrinkling, headaches and jaw pain. Change your smile, change your face, change your life!

Kids. We recommend that you schedule an appointment for your child by age seven. This enables us to identify if orthodontic treatment is necessary and to guide growth of the jaw and incoming permanent teeth when necessary.

How Orthodontic Treatment Works

Orthodontic appliances can be made of metal, ceramic or plastic. They may be removable like Invisalign or they may be brackets bonded to the teeth. By placing a constant, gentle force in a carefully controlled direction, braces slowly move teeth to a corrected position. New wires and other technology now move teeth faster and with less discomfort than in times past.

Duration of Treatment

Treatment time typically ranges from one to three years, depending on the growth of the patient’s mouth and face and the severity of the problem. (Early treatment procedures may take as few as six months.) Patients respond differently to orthodontic treatment, however, so the time to complete your treatment might vary from the original estimate. Diligently using your prescribed rubber bands or headgear helps keep your treatment moving forward!

Our Goals for Comprehensive Orthodontic Treatment Are:

To have the patient’s permanent teeth properly aligned in the upper and lower arches, with the teeth in the upper arch properly meshing with the teeth in the lower arch, in such a manner that they are in harmony with each other and with the muscles of the face, jaws and neck.

To have this occlusion achieved in such a manner as to improve the appearance of the patient wherever indicated and possible.

Comprehensive orthodontic treatment generally lasts 18, 24 or 30 months, and is followed by the insertion of retainers and retention phase.

Variations in Full Orthodontic Treatment

It is our objective to give the best treatment possible over the shortest period of time, and with the most cooperation from the patient. If we start treatment too soon, it may take much longer to complete ( as much as one to three years longer), and we may lose the enthusiasm and cooperation of the patient. But, if we wait too long to start treatment we may not end up with the best possible treatment, especially for young patients with severe problems. We therefore have other types of treatment programs which give the patient the best treatment advantages for any problem.

Phase I and Phase II Treatment:

“Phase I Interceptive Treatment” may be necessary to develop the jaw size in order to accommodate all permanent teeth and to obtain the best relation between the upper and lower jaws to each other. Phase I treatment may begin at approximately 7 years of age and may involve partial braces and expanders to create space for developing adult teeth, correction of crossbites, overbites, underbites or harmful habits. Not all children need this interceptive treatment, but a complimentary exam is recommended.

Phase II may begin when patients have most of their permanent teeth in place. Phase II involves full braces attached to all teeth and the use of high tech wires to apply steady, gentle pressure to gradually move teeth into their proper positions. Dr. Resnick shapes the archwire to move your teeth into your ideal bite. As the wire tries to return to its original shape, it applies pressure to actually move your teeth to their new positions.

Recall Therapy:

During recall therapy we periodically bring in the patient to evaluate the changes since the last exam, and determine when the patient will be ready to start full treatment.

Passive Extraction:

This is where we periodically bring in the patient for an examination, and when necessary, refer the patient back to his family dentist to have certain baby teeth removed. Baby teeth are extracted so that they do not interfere with erupting permanent teeth, which in essence reduces the future severity of the orthodontic problem.

Passive Appliance Therapy:

This is where we put holding appliances in the mouth, to hold open spaces where the baby teeth came out, so that the permanent teeth can erupt in these spaces.

Your Orthodontic Diagnosis

After a thorough evaluation, we will diagnose your bite problem (also called malocclusion or “bad bite”) and determine which appliances (devices) will best correct your bite.

Types of Malocclusions:

Class I: Your jaws line up correctly, but your teeth are crowded, crooked, or too far apart.

Class II: Your upper jaw bites too far in front, or your lower jaw bites too far in back.

Class III: Your lower jaw bites too far in front, or your upper jaw bites too far back.

Other Orthodontic Problems

Openbite: When your molars bite, your front teeth stay open.

Closed bite: When your molars bite, your upper teeth cover your lower teeth.

Crossbite: When your molars bite, some upper teeth close inside your lower teeth.

Length of Your Treatment

The length of your treatment depends on your bite problem, age, response to treatment, and cooperation with wearing your appliances as advised. The cost of your treatment may be based on how long you need to wear your appliances. Dental insurance may help cover the cost of your orthodontics.

Typically, braces do not hurt.  However, there may be some minor discomfort to the teeth for the first few days after your braces are placed on the teeth and as the teeth begin to align. Over the counter (OTC) analgesics can help alleviate the discomfort. OTC analgesics include aspirin, Tylenol and ibuprofen. Eating softer foods will also help alleviate the discomfort.

Because the braces stick out away from your teeth, your lips, cheeks and tongue, may also develop sore spots or irritations from rubbing on the braces. You will be provided with some soft wax to push into your braces. This will make the braces feel smoother and less irritating to your lips, cheeks or tongue.

For the first few days after the braces are attached to your teeth, it may be a little more difficult, and take longer,  to eat as your teeth will be sore as they are starting to align. Again, this can be helped by using  OTC analgesics such as Tylenol, aspirin, or ibuprofen as well as eating a softer diet for a few days.

After braces are attached to your teeth, and before you leave the office, we will review what food items you should avoid. In general, foods that would be considered hard, sticky, crunchy and sugary are going to be foods that you should be avoiding or at a minimum, be very careful while eating.  We want to avoid broken appliances and broken appliances may slow down the treatment process. We also do not want to promote decay or decalcification. Our goal is to have straight, white attractive teeth when finished and we want to finish on time.

Foods that are sticky, such a gum, caramel, tootsie rolls and similar foods will pull the braces off our teeth. This requires repairing the braces and treatment is slowed or reversed and adds to the overall treatment time.

Crunchy foods would include apples, carrots and some harder potato chips. These can also break braces off of the teeth. However, apples and carrots – and similar foods – are okay to eat if they are cut into smaller pieces.

Hard foods like nuts and hard candy or chewing on ice, as well as chewing on hard objects like pens and pencils, will damage the appliances. These should all be avoided.  Granola would be considered a hard food because it often contains nuts.

Sugary foods, like candy and soda pop, contribute to plaque which causes decay and decalcification of the enamel resulting in scars on the teeth.
