Creating a beautiful smile is one of the main reasons people choose to get dental braces, but straight teeth are more than just better looking; they’re healthier, too! Here is some basic information about dental braces.

Properly aligned teeth are easier to clean. When you have clean teeth that are free of dental plaque, you’re less likely to develop dental cavities that need a tooth filling or need treatment for gum disease. Wearing dental braces may be able to correct jaw-joints that are misaligned, which may be the source of nagging headaches and neck pain.

Wearing dental braces can also help you to chew more efficiently helping to prevent excessive wear of your teeth. The types of dental braces today have come a long way over the years. If you’re considering braces you may be thrilled to learn that your smile can be put “back on track” without sacrificing appearance or comfort while receiving treatment.

Dental braces are designed with the intention of helping an orthodontist to be able to correct certain types of malocclusions (abnormal bites) such as an overbite, underbite, crowded teeth, or spaced teeth. The type of braces best suited to meet your needs will depend on the type of your malocclusion and it’s severity.

Dental braces move teeth gradually by applying pressure to the teeth. The majority of this pressure is applied by a metal wire called an archwire. Tiny brackets are placed on each tooth and the archwire is fastened to these brackets. These brackets are typically small and glued onto the front of each individual tooth. Rubber bands called ligatures go around these brackets holding the archwire in place and placing added pressure on the teeth.

While traditional metal braces are still extremely popular for straightening teeth, there is now a variety of options for braces designed with keeping your comfort and appearance in mind:

Removable Dental Braces have become very popular and are mouthguard-like devices made of a clear plastic. The most common type of removable braces are the Invisalign dental aligners.

Teenagers might also be interested in colored ligatures (the rubber band that go around the brackets) which are especially popular with for showing school spirit, celebrating the holidays or sporting the colors of a favorite team. During routine archwire adjustments ligatures can be changed by your orthodontist.

Regardless of the type of dental braces that you wear, your orthodontic treatment plan will typically consists of three stages:

Pretreatment – Where your dentist or orthodontist will determine not only if you need braces, but also which type of treatment will be best for you and your needs.
Active treatment – This is the phase of treatment in which you will wear your braces. This stage can last anywhere between one to two years in most cases.
Retention – This takes place once your braces are removed. The majority of patients will wear an orthodontic retainer which helps the teeth settle into their permanent location.

1. How should I clean my baby’s teeth?
Most all Pediatric Dentist agree that the best choice for infants is a toothbrush that is specially designed for infants. If you can’t readily find a toothbrush labeled infant, then use a toothbrush with a small head and soft bristles. Plaque bacteria can lead to decay. Brushing several times per day, especially at bedtime, will help remove plaque bacteria.

2. At what age should my child have his/her first dental visit?
The general rule for a first dental visit is “First visit by first birthday.” Once your child’s first tooth appears, you should bring them to a pediatric dentist to prevent dental problems. This typically occurs between the ages of 6 and 12 months.

3. Why should my child see a pediatric dentist instead of our regular family dentist?
Pediatric dentistry is a dental specialty that focuses on the oral health of young people. Following dental school, a pediatric dentist has two to three years additional specialty training in the unique needs of infants, children and adolescents, including those with special health needs.

4. What is baby bottle tooth decay, and how can I prevent it?
Baby bottle tooth decay is a pattern of rapid decay associated with prolonged nursing. Baby bottle tooth decay occurs when children go to sleep while they are breast-feeding or bottle feeding. The flow of saliva is reduced during sleep and this natural self-cleansing method of the mouth is diminished. To avoid the problem of baby bottle tooth decay avoid nursing children to sleep and put water in your child’s bedtime bottle rather than milk, formula, or juice. As your child approaches their first birthday encourage them to drink from a cup. It is recommended by Pediatric Dentist that your child is weaned from the bottle by 12-14 months of age. Between meals have your child drink water as both milk and juice contain sugar.

5. Can thumb sucking be harmful for my child’s teeth?
Crowded teeth, crooked teeth, and bite problems can be the result of finger, thumb, and pacifier sucking habits that are allowed to go on for a long period of time. If a child is still sucking their thumbs or fingers when the permanent teeth arrive, your pediatric dentist may recommend a mouth appliance. While most children will stop thumb/finger sucking on their own, it can be helpful to break these habits by rewarding the child for not doing so.

6. What are dental sealants and how do they work?
Sealants are clear or shaded plastic applied to the teeth that fill in the pitted and grooved surfaces of teeth to help keep them cavity-free. By applying this, food particles that could get caught and cause cavities are shut out. Sealants can effectively protect teeth for several years and are fast and comfortable to apply.

7. Is my child getting enough fluoride?
Fluoride has been shown to make teeth stronger, which dramatically decreases one’s chances of getting cavities. The best and easiest way to get fluoride is in drinking water. To be sure of your fluoride intake, have your local health department conduct an evaluation of the level of fluoride found in your child’s primary source of water. There are fluoride supplements that your pediatric dentist may prescribe in the event that your child is not getting enough fluoride internally through water (especially in communities where the water district does not fluoridate the water or if your child drinks bottled water without fluoride). Unless your water has been specifically tested, stay away from fluoride drops, vitamins or tablets. This goes for well water also, as it may contain fluoride naturally.

8. How safe are dental X-rays?
The use of contemporary safeguards, such as high-speed film and lead aprons, the amount of radiation that one receives during a dental X-ray examination is minimal. Pediatric dentists take particular caution in minimizing the radiation that child patients are exposed to, even though there is very little risk. Dental X-rays, in fact, represent a risk far smaller than that of an undetected and untreated dental problem.

9. My child plays sports. How should I protect my child’s teeth?
The top priority on the list of your child’s needed sports equipment should be a mouth guard. Athletic mouth protectors, also called mouth guards, are made of soft plastic. Molded to fit the upper teeth, they fit comfortably and protect the teeth, lips, and gums from sports-related injuries. Your child’s best protection is a custom fitted mouth guard from your doctor, but any mouth guard works better than none at all.

10. When do the first teeth start to erupt?
The central incisors (the two lower front teeth) typically show up at about 6 to 12 months. These are followed by the two upper central incisors shortly thereafter. The rest of the baby teeth will show up in no particular order over the next 18 to 24 months. All 20 primary teeth should be present at 2 to 3 years.

11. What should I do if my child knocks out a permanent tooth?
Remain calm. Find the tooth if possible and hold it by the crown rather than the root. Replace the tooth in the socket, if it is free of dirt and debris, and hold it there using a washcloth or clean gauze. In the event that you are unable to put the tooth back into it’s socket or it is dirty, put the tooth in a clean container with some milk and take your child and the tooth to your pediatric dentist immediately. Your chances of saving the tooth are better the faster you act.

12. How can I help my child through the teething stage?
Part of the normal process of teeth erupting is experiencing sore gums. For some children the discomfort can be eased by using a teething biscuit, a piece of toast, or a frozen teething ring. You may also be able to obtain medications from your pharmacy that can be rubbed onto the gums to help alleviate discomfort.

13. I noticed a space between my child’s two upper front teeth. Is this cause for concern?
As the other front teeth erupt this space will usually close. Consult your pediatric dentist as they will be able to determine whether there is cause for concern.

14. If my child gets a cavity in a baby tooth, should it still be filled?
There are many reasons why primary, or “baby,” teeth are important. These teeth not only help children to speak clearly and to chew naturally, but they also aid in forming the path for permanent teeth to follow when the time comes for them to erupt. Some primary teeth are necessary all the way up to 12 years old or even longer. Pain, infection of the gums and jaws, impairment of general health and premature tooth loss are just a few of the problems that can be caused by neglecting baby teeth. Tooth decay is an infection that (untreated) will spread. Decay on baby teeth can cause decay on permanent teeth. An instrumental part of enhancing the health of your child is proper care of baby teeth.

15. What causes tooth decay?
Cavities require four things to be able to form — (1) a tooth (2) bacteria (3) sugars or other carbohydrates and (4) time. Dental plaque is a thin, sticky, colorless deposit of bacteria that constantly forms on everyone’s teeth. While eating, the sugars found in food cause this bacteria to produce acids which attack the tooth enamel. Repeated acid attacks, over time, break down the enamel and a cavity forms.

When is the best time to begin Orthodontic Treatment?
Though there is no limit to the age in which a smile can be enhanced by an orthodontist, there is a time period that is optimal. It is recommended by the American Association of Orthodontists that a child’s initial orthodontic evaluation should occur when the first sign of orthodontic problems appears or no later than 7 years of age. Orthodontic treatment may not be necessary at this early age, but the most advantageous time to begin treatment can be anticipated with a vigilant examination.

What are the benefits of early orthodontic evaluation?
More effective orthodontic treatment can be provided, if problems are detected during early evaluations. Serious problems can be prevented from being developed later on with prudent intervention to guide growth as well as development. When it is not yet necessary for dental treatment intervention, an orthodontist is able to carefully monitor growth and development so as to be able to begin treatment at the most ideal time.

Why is age 7 considered the optimal time for screening?
The first adult molars erupt by the age of 7, establishing the back bite. It is during this time that an orthodontist can evaluate tooth relationships, front-to-back and side-to-side. The presence of erupting incisors, for example, can indicate a possible overbite, open bite, crowding, or gummy smiles. Chances for an incredible smile are increased with timely screenings.

What are the advantages of interceptive treatment?
Some of the most direct results of interceptive treatment are:

The opportunity to create room for crowded, erupting teeth

The ability to influence jaw growth, creating facial symmetry

Reducing the risk of trauma to front teeth that are protruding

Preserving space for teeth that have yet to erupt

Reducing the need to remove teeth

Reducing the amount of time needed for treatment with braces

Why should malocclusions be treated?
Untreated malocclusions can result in a variety of problems. According to studies by the American Association of Orthodontists some of these problems include:

Crowded teeth, which are more difficult to brush, floss, and care for properly, which may contribute to tooth decay and/or gum disease.

Protruding teeth are more susceptible to chipping accidentally.

Uneven tooth wear and growth that is unfavorable can result from crossbites.

Speech impediments and tongue-thrusting habits can result from openbites.

Ultimately, orthodontic treatment does more than make a pretty smile—it creates a healthier you.

Invisalign takes a modern stance on straightening teeth. The Invisalign system is a series of clear overlay templates called aligners that have been generated by computer simulation to gradually move the teeth. This series of aligners is custom made for you and only you. As you wear the Invisalign aligners, your teeth are gradually shifted into place. This system is available to adult patients and some teenagers with certain orthodontic bite problems. There are 5 easy steps to a beautiful smile with Invisalign.

The first step of your Invisalign treatment is to make an appointment with one of our orthodontists, who will determine if the Invisalign dental braces system will work for your case.

The second step of the Invisalign system is to create a 3D image of your teeth. This is done by our orthodontist taking x-rays, pictures, and impressions of your teeth. Invisalign will use these images to create a digital 3D image. Using this 3D image, we will be able to map out a treatment plan precisely. Using this 3D technology, we will also be able to show you a virtual representation of the movement of your teeth through each step of your journey to a beautiful smile. Once your Invisalign treatment has been mapped out, it is time to move on to step 3.

For the 3rd step of your Invisalign treatment, you will receive your custom made aligners. These aligners are based on the treatment plan that you and your orthodontist discussed in step number 2. These aligners will not irritate your gums or cheeks as they are made from a BPA-free plastic that is smooth and clear. Outside of brushing, flossing, and eating you will wear your Invisalign aligners approximately 22 hours throughout the day and night. As you wear them your teeth will shift gently and gradually into place. Being virtually invisible, most people will not even notice that you’re wearing them.

Invisalign step number 4 is a continuation of step 3. Approximately every 2 weeks, you will wear new aligners to further the transformation to a more confident smile. Throughout this time, you will have occasional checkups with your orthodontist to monitor your progress about as frequently as a normal dental checkup and teeth cleaning. Sometimes new impressions and revisions are done, and additional trays are fabricated, and is all included in the process.

Revealing your new smile is the last and most exciting part of your Invisalign treatment process. With step number 5, you are finished with your treatment. You and your doctor may want to schedule further “follow up” checkups.

Plaque Locator Tablets | How do they work?

The home dental plaque locator tablets identifies plaque, a sticky substance that collects around and between teeth. The test helps show how well you are brushing and flossing your teeth. Plaque is the major cause of tooth decay and gum disease (gingivitis). It is hard to see with the naked eye because it is whitish colored, like teeth.

It is hard to tell how successfully you removed plaque after brushing and flossing your teeth. You may see some food particles, but you may not see the plaque, which colorless.

When teaching your child how to properly care for their teeth it is important to help them understand why their teeth need to be cleaned daily. Brushing may feel like a chore to children and just like cleaning their room by cramming toys under the bed, they may just go through the motions of brushing to “get it over with,” rushing to finish brushing instead of thoroughly cleaning those pearly white.

One way to help children understand the importance of brushing is to show them the results of their efforts. When children can see that what they are doing has an effect and they are more likely to take things seriously. One way to do this with brushing and flossing is to use plaque locator tablets.

If you have receding gums you may be at risk for plaque buildup. Wearing braces, a chronic medical condition or other risk factors, using plaque locator tablets can help to identify areas of your teeth that you may have missed after brushing and flossing. Plaque locator tablets contain a nontoxic dye that reacts with plaque and you will see dyed areas if plaque is present.

Before using a plaque locator tablets, brush and floss your teeth as usual. There are a variety of plaque locator products to choose from. Some of them available are listed below:

Plaque disclosing tablets: Chew a tablet and let it mix with the saliva in your mouth. Swish the saliva around your mouth for about 30 seconds and spit it out.
Plaque disclosing swab: Use the swabs to wipe the surfaces of your teeth.
Plaque disclosing solution: Swish the solution around in your mouth for about 30 seconds and spit it out.
Plaque disclosing floss: Use Oral-B® Indicator® Floss, which is blue in color to show the plaque you’ve removed after you use it.

How do they work? After brushing, flossing and applying your selected plaque locator products you may see color stained areas that indicate unremoved plaque that can then be brushed and flossed away. This helps you identify areas to improve your brushing and flossing routine. After you’re done using plaque disclosing tablets there may be temporary discoloration of lips and cheeks. Using the tablets at night is recommended as the discoloration should be cleared by morning.

Remember: Even if you aren’t at increased risk for gum disease, plaque disclosing products let you test yourself to see how effectively you remove plaque from your teeth.

Teen Dental Care Advice – Risks of Tongue Piercings
The Dentists and Orthodontists in our practice discuss tough topics with our teen patients. The hottest trends lately are health risks of tongue piercings. Many teenagers are at risk of getting bacteria infections in their mouths and/or damage to their teeth.

Teens with pierced tongues are at risk for adverse effects that could last forever. Over time, the tongue repeatedly rubs against the same areas and may develop mouth ulcers. This constant irritation from the barbell-shaped jewelry could result in periodontal disease or oral cancer.

The Academy of General Dentistry (AGD) reported that tongue piercing can result in chipped teeth, infections, nerve and gum damage, uncontrolled drooling, partial or complete loss of taste, and most commonly, tooth loss.

Other risks of tongue piercings come from the bacteria that covers the tongue. When the tongue is pierced, that bacteria can get in the bloodstream, cause underlying tongue tissues that could lead to serious infections. Pre-cancerous ulcers can only be detected during an oral cancer screening by one of our dentists.

Our practice provides services in all areas of pediatric dentistry; including preventive, restorative, and aesthetic dental care specifically designed to meet the needs of children and teens. Educating patients and their parents about tooth development, proper dental care and dental health is our ultimate goal. Our doctors and staff have received extra training in pediatric dentistry; making our practice an excellent choice to help kids and teens get the necessary care in the most supportive way.

Teen Dental Care Advice
Did you know, forty-seven percent of people who have worn tongue jewelry for four or more years have chipped teeth? As the teen becomes an adult, they may eventually have to spend thousands of dollars on dental procedures to regain the smile they’ll want later in life. So while it may be fun for a teen to have a pierced tongue, damaged and missing teeth, disease, and life-threatening cancer are simply put, not worth it. By taking the best steps towards dental health in the early years, we’ll be able to provide our patients with the opportunity for healthy teeth and gums for life. For more information go to Oral Piercing Risks at WebMD.com.

We strive to mold behavior and change attitudes toward oral hygiene so our patients have the best possible chance at a beautiful smile. What are Orthodontic Appliances? This is a good question for an Orthodontist or a Pediatric Dentist. When a child is determined to need orthodontic care, it is time to learn that Orthodontic Appliances come in two different types: removable and fixed. Both types are available at our office.

Fixed Orthodontic Appliances
Fixed Orthodontic Appliances. These are the most commonly used orthodontic dental devices. Fixed Orthodontic Appliances include:

Dental Braces. These consist of brackets, wires, and bands. The bands are placed firmly around teeth and act as anchors while the brackets are typically attached to the front of teeth. Over time an arch wire attached to the brackets moves the teeth slowly into the proper position. The braces are adjusted by an orthodontist once per month. Treatment lasts anywhere from several months to a few years.

Fixed space maintainers – When a child loses a baby tooth space maintainers will prevent the teeth on each side of the space from moving until the adult tooth is able to come into place. These consist of bands on the adjacent teeth with a wire that goes between the two.

Special fixed appliances – These only used when really necessary and they can be recommended to control thumb sucking, tongue thrusting, or a bite that braces alone cannot.

While patients with fixed appliances are able to eat as they normally would, though some some food and drinks, such as hard or chewy sweets should be avoided. Special mouth guards can also be made for those who play sports.

Removable Orthodontic Appliances – Typically used in treating problems that are considered minor such as correcting teeth that are slightly crooked or spaced. Removable appliances are taken out for cleaning, while eating, or while brushing and flossing.

Examples of removable appliances include:

Aligners. These are an option typically used by adult patients in place of traditional braces. They can be virtually unnoticeable to others and are removable for activities such as eating, brushing, or flossing. These can be capable of correcting more than minor issues on a case by case basis

Lip and Cheek Bumpers. These relieve pressure on the teeth from lips or cheeks.

Removable Retainers. These prevent the teeth from migrating back to their original positioning after fixed appliances such as braces are removed. They may also be modified to prevent thumb sucking, slightly align teeth, or close a small space.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Why should my child see a dentist at one year of age?

The one year / first dental visit will include:

Evaluation of the child: growth, habits, abnormalities or disease
Risk assessment for future problems: growth expectations and future cavities
Preventive information for the parent: oral hygiene techniques and responses to dental injuries
Responses to parents’ questions.

2. Until what age should I help my child with brushing of his or her teeth? Should I be flossing my child’s teeth?

Brushing: help until about 6 years of age or when they can print clearly or tie their shoelaces. Monitor after that time. Remember to use only a pea-sized amount of toothpaste for preschool children.

Flossing: begin when teeth are in contact and done by the parent until about 8 years or when the child can write script (cursive) clearly . Monitor after that age.

Help may be needed beyond these ages with both procedures if the children are wearing braces or space maintainers.

3. I am confused about fluorides. What should be given to my child. What does it do for the teeth?

Fluoride taken systemically or internally aids in the development of teeth. It should be available from 6 months of age until the mid-teens. Systemic use also provides fluoride in the saliva which is used for remineralizing tooth surfaces. The best and least expensive delivery is via water fluoridation, but prescription tablets or drops are appropriate when fluoridated water is not available.

Topical fluorides should be used in toothpaste after age 2. Only a pea-sized portion of toothpaste should be used by preschool children. This may be supplemented by rinses, gels and varnish which are higher dose applications. Topical fluoride use should continue throughout your child’s lifetime.

What it does: fluorides help in the formation of larger and more acid resistant crystals in the enamel and dentin layers of the tooth. Topical and systemic applications remineralize and strengthen areas weakened by foods, acids and bacteria.

4. My child sucks a pacifier. Is that worse than thumb sucking? At what age will this sucking begin causing problems?

All non-nutritive sucking may have an effect on facial / oral growth by distorting bones and modifying the relationship of the upper to lower teeth. These effects tend to vary with duration, frequency and strength of the sucking habit. However, pacifier sucking is generally much easier to halt at about age 2-3 years and rarely reverts to thumb / finger sucking. In addition, the American Academy of Pediatrics encourages pacifier sucking at bedtime for the first year of like as this seems to reduce breathing problems associated with some sleeping positions and the possibility of SIDS.

5. Why does the dentist want to take x-rays when there are no cavities?

A thorough examination cannot be done by simply looking at the teeth. In dentistry, diagnosis also involves an evaluation of the areas between the teeth as well as an assessment of the child’s newly formed and unerupted teeth. For these reasons, x-ray images are necessary. The amount of radiation exposure is very minimal. The frequency of x-rays is limited and dependent on the child’s cavity history. In addition, future cavity risk and any abnormal growth or trauma (accident) findings will determine the need for x-rays.

6. Why fix baby teeth? Aren’t they going to fall out soon?

Primary teeth are present for a great deal of the child’s growing period, some until the child is 12 years old. Cavities can lead to pain, infection and lack of proper function and eating, as well as cavities on the adjacent permanent teeth. These permanent first molars are often erupting by age 6.

7. Do sealants really work to prevent cavities?

Sealants are very effective in preventing cavities because they block the collection of food and bacteria on the grooved surfaces of the back teeth. They are not useful between the teeth and therefore flossing is needed in those areas. Sealants are particularly effective on first permanent molars when applied shortly after their eruption, which is usually at the age of 6. The sealants are applied in a “non-invasive”, bonded manner to these surfaces, may be easily evaluated or reapplied, and are relatively inexpensive.

8. My child has crooked (or crowded teeth). When should he or she be seen by an orthodontist?

Pediatric dentists are knowledgeable about early growth and can evaluate eruption of the primary teeth. At rare times, early orthodontic analysis and intervention is needed prior to age 6. As permanent teeth erupt (mixed dentition), a full growth space and positional) evaluation may be indicated. This is generally done after 7 or 8 years of age.

9. How do you obtain cooperation from a very young child who needs treatment?

A variety of techniques are available and their use is dependent on the child’s age and developmental abilities. These techniques include attention getting and word selection choices, distraction and sequential explanations, and demonstrations (“tell, show, do”). At times, holding or restraining the child may be necessary for an adequate examination. This is often done in a position or manner similar to those used by the pediatrician for a physical examination or short procedure. For young children, cooperation for more extensive treatment often requires distraction techniques such as talking, storytelling and listening to music or stories. These approaches may be enhanced by the use of nitrous oxide or selective medications. Restraint or sedation-anesthesia may be indicated when complex treatments require levels of cooperation similar to those needed for medical or surgical procedures such as ear tube placement. A thorough discussion and selection of the appropriate choices for your child should precede any treatment.

10. What should be done if my child has an accident (that breaks or displaces a tooth)?

Accidents may occur at any age and the severity may be difficult to determine at the time of injury. In general, stabilize your child to prevent further immediate injury and call the dental office (or answering service if it is outside of normal office hours) for specific advice concerning your child’s problem. Time may be of critical importance. Try to speak with the dentist as soon as possible so that your child may receive the appropriate care in a timely manner.

Q: Are you taking new patients?

A: New patients are always welcome. Contact us today to make a new patient appointment and discover a whole new way to experience dentistry! We are proud of the services we provide and appreciate your referrals of family and friends.

Q: Is it going to hurt?

A: Dentistry has come a long way over the years and both dental and hygiene visits are now even more comfortable than ever.

Q: What can I expect at my first visit?

A: At your first visit you will be welcomed by a member of our Client Care Staff who will offer you a beverage while you take a moment to fill out a medical questionnaire. Once you have completed your questionnaire, our Treatment Coordinator will escort you to a private meeting room to take your personal information for our files. This is also your opportunity to ask questions, express concerns and learn about the many dental services provided at Image Dental Studio.

You will then have a full examination by one of our dentists in order to assess your needs. It is our goal to provide all of our patients with the very best care in a comfortable and casual setting. We are always enhancing our services and welcome suggestions and comments from our clients. We look forward to meeting you and your family at your first visit.

Q: How can I reach you in case of emergency?

A: We are concerned about your oral health 24/7. Our dentists carry a pager and may be reached after hours using the phone number provided to you by our treatment staff. We strive to ensure we are available should you have an emergency. In the event that you do not reach a dentist, emergency numbers are provided on our answering service.

Q: How often should I have my teeth cleaned?

A: We recommend that you have your teeth cleaned by a dental hygienist at least every six months and every three to four months should you have periodontal disease. Our hygienists are experienced professionals who can recommend the treatment that is best for you.

Q: Where can I park?

A: For your convenience, parking is available to the back of our office. However, should the parking lot be full when you arrive for your appointment, we recommend parking on the street between the hours of 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Q: If I have to have freezing, will it hurt and how long will it last?

A: Freezing is no longer a painful procedure. We first apply a topical gel that numbs the gums even before we give freezing to make the experience much more comfortable. Freezing generally lasts between 2 and 5 hours depending on the procedure.

Q: If my insurance isn’t willing to pay, does that mean the treatment isn’t necessary?

A: Our job is to recommend the best treatment for you. Insurance policies vary depending on the package your employer purchased. Insurance policies have general allowances for a great number of employees and do not look at the specific needs of the individual. Denial of coverage does not in anyway reflect the necessity of the treatment, but rather the contract’s limitations on eligible procedures.

Q: Can I still have treatment if I am pregnant?

A: Pregnant women tend to experience swollen and tender gums during pregnancy. This is due to the excess of hormones in the body, so extra attention should be paid to the teeth and gums during this time. We do not recommend x-rays unless absolutely necessary or bleaching your teeth while pregnant. However, the majority of procedures are safe for expecting mothers. It is often recommended that elective procedures be done after the first trimester. Massage mats, gel eye packs, pillows and blankets are available for your added comfort.

Q: What do you have available for anxiety?

A: Many people suffer from anxiety so you are not alone. We offer nitrous oxide for those patients who feel they can benefit from a relaxant during their appointment. The nitrous oxide (laughing gas) does not have a lingering effect so you can drive home right after your appointment. Patients who wish to have nitrous oxide are asked to refrain from eating 2 hours prior to their appointment to avoid upset stomach.

Q: What type of dental floss should I use?

A: There are many dental floss products on the market, but we like to recommend Glide floss as it never shreds and is easy to use. Ask us for a free sample at your next visit!

Q: My son wants to pierce his tongue. Should I be concerned?

A: There are many risks associated with tongue piercing including nerve damage, swelling, infection, bad breath, cracked and broken teeth, gum recession, and impaired speech to name only a few. We strongly recommend that anyone wanting to have their tongue pierced speak to a dental professional and become fully informed before making any decisions.

Q: Does my home water filter remove fluoride from the water?

A: Water filters do not remove fluoride.

Q: Does bottled water contain fluoride?

A: Bottled water does not contain fluoride. Most toothpaste will supply an adequate amount of fluoride.

Q: How often should I brush?

A: We recommend that you brush your teeth at least twice daily, morning and night.

Q: Do whitening toothpastes really work?

A: Whitening toothpastes help to remove plaque and stain, but will not whiten the teeth significantly. There are several whitening products on the market that are much more effective.

Q: Do the whitening products you can buy in the drugstore work?

A: In some cases, yes. Please ask your dentist which whitening product is right for you. There are many factors, which could affect the success of the whitening process.

Q: Are electric toothbrushes better than manual brushes?

A: In most cases, electric brushes are more effective in removing plaque and bacteria. Ask your dentist which one is right for you.

Dental Braces | Cosmetic Dentistry

How To Take Good Care Of Your Braces?

Food particles and plaque can accumulate on braces in no time at all. Lack of proper oral hygiene while wearing braces can result in tooth decay or other periodontal diseases.

You must follow a routine plaque control program similar to what is explained below:

A special orthodontic toothbrush or a soft toothbrush can be used.
As flossing with braces is harder to do and time consuming, use of super-floss, floss threaders etc can be beneficial. In order to remove hard to reach plaque and food particles between tooth and braces, an inter-dental brush can be really helpful.
Oral irrigators can be added help in cleaning up your teeth faster.
Risk of cavities can be reduced by the regular use of a mouthwash with fluoride in it.
Do not eat hard to bite food items as they can loosen or bend braces.
Consume fruits and vegetables only in small pieces and always chew them using the back teeth.
Chewing gum, candy items etc should not be used as they can loosen, break or bend the braces.
Reduce you sugar consumption as sugar is known to raise the risk of tooth decay.
Never miss out on any of your follow up dental appointments.
It is not an easy task to take proper care of your teeth with braces, but the hope of attaining a killer smile should act as a motivation for you in doing so.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why Should I Get Braces?

A great smile can change your face totally. Braces can help you to attain a much brighter smile. Adjusting the teeth and thus making changes in the way your face is seen can help in achieving this. This will in turn add to your
self-confidence and over all good feeling.
Your digestion will improve as you chew better. Uneven teeth can be a problem in chewing properly. If food goes to the stomach without getting chewed properly, that can cause indigestion or malnutrition.
Reduced risk of future dental problems. If you do not use braces and get your teeth fixed, you may be facing multiple dental problems for years.
You may find it difficult to clean uneven teeth. Your teeth and gums may be facing unnecessary wear and tear. After suffering through such problems for years, many adults are opting for braces these days.
You can reduce the risk of breathing problems. As people get older, the roof of their mouth may cause some blockage in their nose and cause breathing trouble. This may cause snoring or sleep apnea. Braces from an orthodontist can reduce these risks.
Uneven teeth are prone to get damaged faster and this problem can be significantly reduced.
Take care of harmful habits.

Why Do We Need Braces?

Orthodontic problems are part of human genetic system. People have been growing steadily in size over the last few millennia. The proportion of size increase for human teeth was at a considerably faster level than the rest of his face.
This resulted in having bigger teeth than what can fit properly in people’s mouth. So an orthodontist takes charge of the situation so as to rearrange your teeth and resize your mouth as much as possible.

Is There Any Other Reasons For People To Get Braces?

Babies using pacifiers for a very long time, sucking fingers even after they turn two years old, habit of biting finger nails, habit of biting lips, injuries to the mouth etc can result in orthodontic problems. Sudden stoppage of breastfeeding can also cause similar problems. But the main reason for most people is the faster pace of teeth growth compared to growth of their mouth. As it is a standard feature of human growth, you don’t have any choice other than
facing it.

How Does Orthodontics Work?

Braces bring each of the teeth in to the desired positions by the application of gentle and consistent pressure. When you look at your braces, they may look like they are sitting idle. But all through the orthodontic procedure, there are some small helpful changes happening in your mouth. The major parts of braces are the brackets placed on each teeth and arch wire, which joins the arches together. Brackets are made of metal or ceramic and are designed to fit on to each tooth. Now the orthodontist will stretch the arch so as to bring the desired look after the treatment is over. The arch wire will be constantly applying pressure on the brackets and will bring the teeth in to the right positions.

The orthodontist is able to stretch your jaw so a to make space for all your teeth to fit in comfortably. As a next step, the teeth will be pushed in to the appropriate spaces. He can use a “palatal expander” so as to stretch your upper
jaw. Again, a “facebow” can be used to push back any teeth sticking outwards. With all these gadgets at his disposal, your orthodontist can move your teeth and jaw so as to get the perfect smile you always dreamed about.

At What Age Can You Start Orthodontic Treatment?

There is no age limitation for orthodontic procedures and these are recommended for kids as young as 4 years old. Older people up to 60 years are known to undergo this procedure to gain perfect teeth. But the right age for the best
results and least pain is between 8 and 14 and we recommend you to start the procedure around this time.

Human jaw is known to grow at the fastest pace when you are 8 or 9 years old. This is the appropriate time for “interceptive orthodontics” where your jaw can be expanded so as to obtain the best results. After this, you will have to wait until your permanent teeth are in place before you start your full orthodontic procedure. This is usually done at ages 13 or 14 after the permanent teeth are in place.

Is There Any Difference In Orthodontic Treatment Done Once You Are Older?

There is no age limitation for this treatment and can be delayed for a few years. But it will take much more time and can be a lot more painful once you are older. In order to gain the expansion gained easily at age 8, the orthodontist will have to exert much more pressure at age 14 and this would be much more painful. After you turn 20 years or so, only surgery can provide the desired jaw expansion.

How Does It Feel To Put Braces On?

Except for the initial sore feeling in mouth, teenagers never find any big problem with braces. They may feel the soreness for a week or so every time after the braces are tightened. The newer braces are so user friendly that you
won’t even notice their existence in your mouth. The only exceptions would be if you get smashed in your face or when the braces are tightened.

It won’t be such an easy feeling if you get braces past 18 years of age or so. You may feel like your teeth are loose. Even then the resultant killer smile gained can be worth all this trouble.

Do Braces Hurt?

It depends on the type of braces you get. Older braces were really painful for the most part. New generation braces are painful only when they are set in place or tightened.

Is It Okay To Talk With Braces On?

Absolutely. Normal braces do not affect your voice or talking ability. Every thing normal teenagers do like singing, shouting, talking, yelling etc is possible. Braces are not going to hinder you from any of these activities. Only
exception would be if you get hit on your face. That can be a painful experience!

Some times the orthodontist has to place an instrument that can restrict your tongue movement. This may cause difficulty for you to talk clearly for a couple of days or so. Later, you can talk properly.

Are There Any Activities Those Need To Be Avoided While Having The Braces On?

Avoid fighting and chances of getting hit on your face. As such avoid sporting activities that involve close body contact like boxing, karate, wrestling etc.

Can I Eat Normally After Getting Braces?

It is okay to eat most of the food items you eat now. As your mouth is going to be sore for a week after the braces are put on, try to eat only softer food items for that period of time. After this period of time, you can go back to
your regular menu.

Is There Any Other Food Product To Be Avoided?

Eating sticky food items like chewing gum, caramel, candy etc can cause the braces to slide away from their position. Crunchy food items like carrots, apples, hard rolls etc need to be reduced so as to avoid the risk of your braces
get knocked out.

What To Do If The Braces Come Off?

It is not a serious problem and can be easily reattached by your orthodontist. If it occurs quite frequently, you may need to spend some extra time to get the results.

Why Don’t The Orthodontist Set The Braces In Place Real Strongly So That The
Braces Do Not Come Off Even During Eating?

The braces are to be removed after the treatment program. In case, they are set in place too strong, they cannot be removed easily at the end of the procedure.

How Is The Very First Visit To My Orthodontist Going To Be?

Your orthodontist will start the treatment only after a few appointments. The very first appointment will be dedicated to study your medical history. He will thoroughly examine your mouth and decide whether you need any orthodontic
procedures.

Your orthodontist is going to go through your mouth and verify the finish of each section. He will check to see if your mouth is large enough for all your teeth to fit in. He will check the alignment of your top teeth and bottom teeth.
He will look for any uneven, missing or crooked teeth. He will see if there is any breathing problems or joint problems in your jaw. The orthodontist is going to make his final decision as to whether you need braces or not based on all
these factors.

My dad is a periodontist Family Dental Care: Helping everyone.

I grew up with a dentist for a dad, and not even just a general dentist but a periodontist. That meant that any time we ever ate candy or popcorn, he would pull out the floss and make us all take care of our teeth. It was really embarrassing as a child, but now that I look back on it I am really grateful that he gave me such great habits to take me through life with. I am the person who always takes care of my teeth, and I floss and brush and swirl every morning and every night. I have never even had a cavity, though my dad always says that is really more genetic than anything. But either way, I know that my dad goes to work every day and does oral surgeries and puts in dental implants for patients, and so there are a lot of people out there who don’t have good teeth. I am happy for the benefit of growing up with those great habits, because it has kept me out of his dentist chair. While I do go to the dentist at least once a year for the annual check up and cleaning, I have never had to visit a periodontist for any reason, thank goodness. I know that my husband did not grow up with the same dental habits that I did, and so he has had to have many different procedures done in his adult life on his teeth. They have all been painful and long lasting, and they are not things that I want to go through with my own mouth.

I am raising my kids just like my dad did with me, to always floss after a meal and to brush and rinse and swish their mouths every night and every morning. I hope that I can instill in them the same things that he did with me. That I like going to the dentist and that the dentist is fun and helpful and keeps your teeth clean. But that you don’t want to be in a position where you need the services of a periodontist, because that means that you have not really been taking care of your teeth, and they are going to need outside help if they are going to stay strong and in your mouth. We don’t want cavities and gum disease or any other reason for a dental implant. We want strong and healthy teeth that are going to last for the entirety of their lives. I hope that I am able to get that across to them, because it is going to be very important to them when they are adults, that they kept up with their teeth. And that they never had to visit their grandfather in his place of work, and get into that periodontist chair. I want them to keep all their teeth, just like my dad taught me how to do when I was growing up. It wasn’t a bad thing to have a periodontist for a father.

My aging mother is sensitive about needing a dental implant

My mother is getting into her late sixties now, and is close to retirement. After getting divorced nearly ten years ago, she realized she was going to have to work longer than she had planned, and retire later than she wanted to. She was in pretty good health and I figured at least this would keep her mind able and occupied. I had been nervous about her being alone for so long, but at least I knew she would keep busy with her job for several more years.

Now, here we were, at the several more years point. She was close to wanting to retire but figured she had better get a couple more years in so that her salary would be hiring and her retirement fund would be padded a little bit more. I knew she would get social security at a decent rate and she would be covered by Medicare for her health but I worried about her anyway. And I worried with good reason, apparently. She called me last week with a toothache. She would not even have mentioned it I don’t think, except she was nibbling on a snack while we were on the phone and said “ouch” loudly at one point. I pestered her to tell me what was bothering her and she finally admitted she had a toothache. She had at least made an appointment to see her dentist but it would not be for several days still. I asked her if she had been lately and she said she still abides by her doctor’s preventive dentistry recommendations, with cleanings twice per year, but that she usually skips the exam part because they charge so much for two minutes of the dentist glancing at your teeth.

I told her to call me as soon as she was done with the dentist, which she did. I am pretty sure she waited a couple of hours but I was glad she called regardless. I had a feeling she was going to lose a tooth but I had not wanted to tell her that ahead of time or freak her out at all. I was right. The dentist wanted her to have at least one tooth extracted and a dental implant put in in its place. This did spook my mother a bit, but I talked her down after a while, explaining that it was no big deal. I knew she felt sensitive about getting old, so I tried to explain to her that they do this for anyone who has to lose a tooth, no matter their age. He also wanted her to have a root canal on a different tooth, and he would be able to do both at the same time.

I promised mom I would go with her so I could drive her to and from the appointment, and take care of her afterwards. I knew she was nervous but oral surgery is not a big deal, and I did my best to keep her calm and convince her that it would be best for her health in the long run if she removed unhealthy teeth and replaced them.

It Was Time To Focus On Cosmetic Dentistry

I talk with a lot of people who want to take shortcuts that don’t even exist when it comes to their oral hygiene. I try to explain that it isn’t that complicated and to think about your teeth like you hopefully think about your car, your teeth need routine maintenance to keep them in working order just like your car does. I went to school for a long time to learn how to fix issues that could only be caused by years of neglect, I also learned how to prevent those issues. I didn’t understand how so many people neglected their teeth, like they weren’t going to have to personally deal with the damage eventually. I got into cosmetic dentistry because I wanted to make a good living and I wanted to be a doctor, but I didn’t want to go to more than 10 total years of school. Now, my practice was doing well and I was thinking about taking on a partner to help with all of the business, it would also give me the opportunity to focus on marketing our Invisalign and other cosmetic services. We obviously made money on general dentistry but there was honestly better money in aesthetics like teeth whitening, porcelain veneers, bonding and Invisalign so I wanted to find a way to maximize our profits.

It was important for me to still provide a full array of general dental services for the entire family, I just wanted to make it known that we were also completely capable of servicing their cosmetic needs as well. I thought that it might be a good idea to bring in an old, traditional dentist to take over all of the general dentistry so I could focus on cosmetic side of the dentistry business. I felt like I was a lot better at fixing people’s smiles than I was filling in their cavities but the more I thought about it, the more I thought that I was just more motivated to work on people’s smiles than I was their crowns and root canals. I wondered if it had anything to do with the fact that people who came in to see me to improve their smiles actually wanted to be there whereas everyone else was there because they felt they had to be. This was probably how a lot of public school teachers felt, I thought as I drilled into a patient’s molar. I was done being altruistic and fighting the good fight, if people didn’t want to take care of their teeth then fine, I didn’t feel it was my job to try and convince them that they should anymore. I was just going to focus my energies on providing the services that people wanted, I felt like it would probably help me feel better about coming into work everyday as well. I needed to talk to my wife about it though before I made any major decisions but I didn’t anticipate any issues, I’m sure that she’d be supportive of anything that made me feel better about my job.

Orthodontics Combines Health and Good Looks

When I was younger, I used to think that braces were only about looks. I thought that braces were tools used to make your teeth straight and neat-looking. But as I got older, I began to realize that it is far more complicated than that. Braces are also about health. And there are ways that bad teeth can harm you, more than just your image. You want your teeth to fit together neatly. Your teeth are like little gears that fit together neatly. When they do, you are able to chew effectively but you are also able to speak more clearly. People sometimes forget that speech has more to do with the tongue than other parts of the mouth. If the tongue is crowded by misplaced teeth, then you child could develop speech patterns indicative of a speech impediment. But problems can be even more severe. Some people end up needed surgery on their jaws. There can be deeper problems related to the jawbone that needs adjustment. Left untreated, these can produce agonizing migraines and other problems. If you are having migraines, you first guess might not be that it has to do with your jaw. The first person you see would probably not be an orthodontist. And yet these are the far reaching problems that a lack of orthodontic care can produce.

On the other hand, who are we kidding? It is also very much about aesthetics, as well. We want straight looking teeth that are neat and beautiful. We could say that straight teeth are the epiphenomenon of dental care. Like a lack of bad breath from using mouthwash is just the indirect consequence of killing all of the germs, we could also say that straight beautiful teeth is just the after-effect of straight, properly functioning teeth. But I think that this would be somewhat disingenuous. Good looking teeth is a lot of people’s primary goal, which is fine. As long as they have proper dental health, what does it matter? And there are ways that you can have a great smile while you still have your braces on. Invisalign braces are all the rage right now. They are transparent braces. No one will even know that you are wearing them. Invisalign braces are great for adults that do not feel comfortable donning the trappings of a junior high student. They will feel great, look great, and you will be well on your way to a beautiful smile and good dental health. Orthodontics combines both of those in one swift motion. Because of this, you do not have to choose. It is not always the case, but braces are an instance in which the thing that makes you look good is also the best thing for you. This point can be overstated in other fields, like exercise. You can certainly over-do it with exercise. But with braces, a beautiful smile is an indication of a healthy smile. So go take your kid down to the orthodontist’s office and get an inspection today.

Like Invisalign, Orthodontics Technology Is Changing

What must it have been like to be an orthodontics patient in the late 19th century or the early 20th century? Sometimes, I have the tendency to idealize the past as rustic and idyllic, but I am less inclined to do so when I think about early American orthodontists. We have certainly come a long way in terms of our orthodontics technology. Not only does this make the process more comfortable and less prone to injury or medical mistakes, I have to imagine that it makes the entire process more effective. So there is no reason not to harness the advantages of our modern era. While there may be some virtue in adhering to tried and true methods, there is also virtue in not fearing technology and novelty.

Consider Invisalign braces. These are transparent braces. They are hard to see, and they save teens and adults alike from the embarrassment of those big, gaudy metal braces crammed into our mouth. Furthermore, you do not have to adhere to any dietary restrictions. That means that you can eat popcorn, caramel, gum, and all of the other things that are normally prohibited by the normal braces of brackets and wires. The best part of Invisalign braces, in my humble opinion, is that they do not scratch your mouth. These braces look like small mouth guards. They set right over the faces of your teeth. There are no pointy edges of brackets. When I had my braces, the worst part was the scratches to the inside of my cheeks or my gums. These scratches would sometimes turn into canker sores. Then the brackets would continue to exacerbate the sore. It was as bad as it sounded. Invisalign braces completely sidestep this feature of orthodontics. So these braces do not hurt your mouth, let you eat whatever you want, and they are invisible so that you do not have to declare to the world at large that you are wearing braces.

It must be too good to be true. They must not work properly. They must take considerably longer than brackets and wire braces, right? Nope. They work just as well. It is not a trick. It is just a technological advancement. I notice in older generations the tendency to think that a certain level of discomfort or effort is necessary for something to be good. This can preclude them from taking advantage of the tools at their disposal. Orthodontics is just the same. We have just come a long way. Can you imagine if we transported an orthodontist from the year 1890 to the present day and showed him our brackets and wire braces? He might also think that it were just a trick or a charlatan sham. We would also think that he is naïve. It is exciting to think of the possibilities for medical technology in the future. And this extends beyond just orthodontics. Orthodontics, however, will also be on the receiving end of these innovations. Invisalign is just one example of how technology innovation has made dental health easier to achieve.

How To Build Your Self Confidence

Has your self-confidence taken a plunge due to a comment regarding your teeth? Your own observation regarding a less than perfect smile, or suggestions by an orthodontist to fix your teeth? If so, don’t worry. This situation is temporary and can be fixed in no time – and without anyone even knowing! By the time you’re done straightening your teeth, you’re likely to get comments asking what exactly has been done.

Here’s how Invisalign works:
It’s an invisible plastic braces that is naked to the any onlookers’ eye – unless it’s a dentist of course. In addition, the braces are usually tailored to the customer’s mouth structure, as the orthodontist will usually form these from an x-ray or the patient taking a bite into a mold. There are several formations done over a series of one and a half to every two years. In addition, the orthodontist will typically check in with the patient to determine if any discomfort is being experienced, or if there need to be any changes made.

The cost of Invisalign can vary from one provider to a next, but this can usually be found out easily online. In addition, some dental insurance may cover all or part of the procedure – so check in with the insurance company to see.
Invisalign braces are also very portable, which means it’s not affixed to the actual teeth in a permanent sense. It acts as a cover over regular teeth – which means you can wash your own teeth properly as well as the Invisalign braces each and every day.

Invisalign and contact lenses can help teenagers who worry about their appearances

Being a teenager is a difficult period in everyone’s life. Hormones are raging and social cliques are forming and everyone just wants to fit in. Being different as a teenager is torturous for many, and most teens report just striving to fit in and be like their peers. This includes the activities they do, their appearances, and anything else that makes them more like their classmates. Having glasses, braces, or being overweight can add to a teen’s discomfort during an already uncomfortable period in their life.

Luckily, technology has come quite a long ways since the old days of mouths full of metal, which is what most adults picture when they envision their child getting braces. They might recall their own years as children or teenagers with painful metal braces that needed regular, painful tightening. They undoubtedly look back on childhood pictures and see the braces in school pictures and scrapbooks. Today’s kids have more options, however.

Contact lens technology has evolved to the point of it being easy and affordable for almost anyone to wear contacts instead of glasses. Orthodontics have evolved to the point of invisible braces now in existence, a viable option for any teenager that needs braces or any adult who never made a cosmetic correction to their teeth for not wanting to wear the ugly metal versions.

Technology has also made it easier and sneakier for teenagers to bully one another, using social media and the internet to torment classmates and hide behind a facade while very publicly humiliating whoever the victim is. Being the parent of a teenager is just as difficult, because you have to navigate all these new ways in which teenagers can express themselves that never existed when you were growing up. While certain things like contact lenses or nearly invisible braces can make certain aspects of being a teenager less awkward, there is still the inevitable fact that some students are better at school than others. Some are better at sports than others. Everyone looks and dresses differently, and somewhere along the line, teenagers will grow into adults who also look and dress differently.
By then, it is a good thing to be unique. It is just a very trying time for teenagers in middle and high school. The pressure can be intense to fit in, perform well academically and athletically, and be a social butterfly. Many do not fit into this norm, and many are happy to not fit in. Still others struggle, however, and are among the many students who look to minimize awkwardness about their appearance such as glasses or braces. Parents can only do so much, as it is peers who have the most influence on teenagers at this point in their lives. Parents need to be the adults, set the boundaries, and be there for their children when things are tough. If they can also afford to get them contact lenses or braces, then all the better. Their kids might not recognize the significance of it in the moment, but they will surely remember when they look through school pictures later in life!

I didn’t have Invisalign but my kids sure will.

I never had the chance to get my teeth straightened when I was a kid. If you look at my mouth, it is a disaster area of crooked teeth, some of them so slanted that they almost appear to be horizontal. It isn’t that my parents did not want me to have good teeth – far from it, my mother often lamented that she was not able to provide me with good care from a pediatric dentist. The simple fact is that she could not afford to have braces put on my teeth, and because of that I am left with a mouth that has a lot of issues.

For starters, I have a lot of trouble with keeping my teeth healthy. Because my teeth are at such funny angles, it gets really hard to clean them. Bits of food get stuck all of the time, and flossing is a thing of nightmares for me. I have had to have a lot of fillings because I just can’t get my teeth as clean as they need to be to prevent tooth decay. As it stands now, I have gotten too old to fix many of my oral issues without resorting to pretty major surgery. That is something that I am not prepared to do from a financial standpoint, so I just have to suffer through it. Even still, I am probably going to have to have a bridge installed soon just so I can keep what teeth I do have that chew correctly.

When I have children, though, they will not have to live through the same suffering that I have. Dental offices that specialize in children’s care are easy to find now, and – let’s be honest – I am in a much better position than my mother was when I was young. If my children have any dental issues – and I really hope that they do not – I am going to make sure that they get straightened out as soon as possible. Hopefully it won’t take much convincing; after all, all I’ll need to do is show them how messed up my own teeth are to encourage them to brush! I never thought I would be one of those dads that says, “Do it or you will end up like this!” But I guess that is exactly what is going to happen.
Anyway, it is a lot easier to get a kid to accept wearing the new Invisalign style braces than the old metal grin kind. Heck, I think it is really cool that technology finally caught up to dentistry – generations of kids went through the awful decision of “messed up teeth or three years looking like a freak.” I’m happy that my kids won’t have to do that, that there is an option that can fix their teeth without making them feel ostracized. But I can assure you, they won’t have a choice as to whether or not they get the braces: dental health is not an option in my family now!

Great Orthodontists make beautiful smiles.

My dearest friend Nisa always prided herself of her smile, beauty, and skill. “I’m not conceited” she use to say, ”simply fabulous.” Where most people lacked confidence, she flourished in it. I rather enjoyed it, because while she would tease about her beauty and flaunt her confidence… she was still deep down humble and had worked extraordinarily hard at increasing her skill as an aerial artist. She was one of the most amazing dancer’s I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. When she got up on the silk fabrics that were strung to the ceiling, it was truly breath taking.

We were at a local club where we often performed during the musicians set. Usually this was before a DJ who was just dancing in his place behind a computer and well…usually not that entertaining. Of all DJ’s I have ever had the pleasure of seeing, Kaminanda was the most fun to watch. He knew his music and watching him dance to his music was like watching him control an invisible orchestra that lived in the computer while at the same time spell casting magic and love into the crowd. Another DJ was playing and Nisa was preparing to go up on a silk that is dangled into the middle of the crowd in front of the stage. With the help of the other performers, we had created a safety perimeter around the silk to ensure no drunk onlooker messed with the silk. People do not realized how dangerous silks are. Well.. the crowd that night sadly had opportunity to witness just how dangerous silk dancing really is.

Nisa was flowing as usual. Beautiful and entrancing to watch! She was doing a trick she had performed many time which requires one to wrap the silk skillfully around their legs until they are very high in the ribbon and then they drop themselves, the fabric unwinding them and catching the fretfully close to the ground. It was usually performed as the finally. Nisa was all wrapped up and was sitting at the top of the ribbon. She looked around the crowd and gave one last smile. She dropped. Everyone held their breath. The rope snapped taught, but she had miscalculated how far the drop was. CRACK. The sound of her face hitting the cement still haunts my dreams. Her legs were still wound in the ribbon and thankfully all her body weight did not come in behind her however she still slammed her face extremely hard into the cement. She had been knocked unconscious, left dangling in the ribbon, and me and the other performers ran to her aid.

She was okay…except the fact that she was going to desperately need to the skilled hand of an orthodontist. She had fallen at a strange angle on her mouth and had literally shifted her teeth around and chipped a few of them. Not only was she going to need a replacement tooth or two for aesthetic purposes, it appeared to me she was going to need braces as well.

Being her closest friend, I went with her to the orthodontics office. The staff was exceedingly kind and patient. Nisa was rather short with them at times, and they never lost their patience. Oh the death glare she gave the orthodontist when he said she would need braces. Thankfully though, he quelled her worries by offering her Invisalign braces! These were braces that were made form a clear material that way no one be able to tell she was wearing them! She was so relieved to know that her days as a performer were not over and she would be able to fix her teeth with out the embarrassment of metal braces!

Going to the Dentist Regularly is a Vital Aspect of a Healthy Lifestyle.

Most people know that it is important to take care of their teeth, but many people do not know how far-reaching the effects of your oral hygiene habits are. For one thing, your oral health is directly related to your overall health, which means that if your mouth is not healthy, it is unlikely that the rest of your body will be. Since your mouth is the means by which all nutrients enter your body, it is not hard to see why this is the case. If your teeth are coated in bacteria, you are swallowing all that bacteria when you eat and drink. This puts you at a higher risk for heart disease, diabetes, and a bunch of other common chronic conditions. This means that going to the dentist regularly is a vital aspect of a healthy lifestyle. Your dentist can let you know if your oral hygiene regimen is doing the trick or not. If your regimen is lacking in some way, your dentist can tell you what you can do differently. Also, your dentist can let you know if you have any cavities or any signs of gingivitis. These are both conditions that are common and easy to treat, but they can both get very out of hand if you do not treat them soon enough. In extreme cases, you can even lose teeth to both cavities and gingivitis. To make matters worse, you can even develop both conditions at the same time, since they both result from improper oral hygiene. If your gums bleed when you brush your teeth, you may have the beginning stages of gingivitis. Dentists recommend brushing your gums thoroughly to prevent the condition.

Going to the dentist on a regular basis is not only a good idea for hygienic reasons. Your dentist also keeps track of the alignment of your teeth. Teeth can shift over time. If your teeth are misaligned or are becoming misaligned, you should consider treatments that will shift them back. Braces are one example of this sort of treatment. Braces utilize very thin wires and metal brackets. They have been used for quite awhile, though the techniques have become a little more advanced over the years. Nonetheless, the basic premise has remained the same. Though braces are one of the most effective treatments of tooth and jaw alignment issues, they are fairly inconvenient and uncomfortable. Plus, many people are reluctant to get them because they are worried about how they look. The braces of today are less noticeable than the braces of the past. They can still be uncomfortable, though. Especially when they are adjusted, braces can leave your mouth feeling sore. This is almost unavoidable, though, since your teeth need to be physically moved into the proper position. This is an inherently uncomfortable process. Nonetheless modern cosmetic dentistry has become quite advanced, so the discomfort is minimal. Besides, it is far better to get the treatment you need than to allow your teeth to continue to shift out of place.

Getting help from my orthodontist

I recently discovered that I have some kind of degenerative disease in my gums, and if I don’t deal with it quickly and swiftly, it is going to have an affect on my teeth in the near future. Teeth are something that you only have one set of, and it is really important to be sure to take care of them as much as possible. So that is why I was so surprised when my orthodontist told me that I am going to be facing this, because I have always taken very good care of my teeth my whole life. From the time I was old enough, I always flossed and brushed, every morning and every night, and often somewhere else in the middle of the day. As an adult, I have always used mouth wash as well, because I know there are germs that aren’t removed from just the flossing and brushing alone. And I suppose that I was lucky because my teeth were always straight and I never had to worry about needing to get braces or anything else like that. So when the dentist referred me to the orthodontist, it was the first time I had ever been in to see on of those types of doctors. I wasn’t sure what the problem was, but I knew that my gums just weren’t as they used to be. They were more sensitive than before, and they seemed to bleed often when I would floss. I have never had my gums bleed when flossing before, so I decided I should probably make an appointment and go in to see the dentist.

It was the dentist who decided that a specialist was necessary to check out my gums, and he made a referral for me to the orthodontist office. When I got in there he was very surprised that I was there to see him with such straight and clean teeth, but after he ran the tests he informed me that there was a disease in my gums that was not going to simply go away. All the prep work I have always done with my mouth was good because it kept me in the clear longer than I would have been otherwise, but it still didn’t prevent me from getting this gum disease that I am now having to deal with. It essentially just means that I need to rinse with a different mouth wash that is actually a prescription strength and filled with medicine that will kill the disease, and I also need to go in for more regularly scheduled dentist and orthodontist appointments than is usual for me, but this is okay as long as I’m not going to lose my teeth. If we can stop the gums from degenerating, then my teeth will be fine, or so I have been assured by the dentist. But I’m not as convinced and I’m still really worried about the health of my mouth and gums. I just want this to be over and to be back with healthy teeth.

Fixing my smile again with Invisalign
My teeth seem to have a mind of their own and that mind has decided to be remarkably defiant. Growing up I had braces a few times, each time with the focus being on a different set of teeth, trying to move everything around like a puzzle to get it to where my teeth would finally look nice. After every set of braces, one thing would be fixed but then there would always be another problem. I went through all of the different spacers and expanders and some truly weird stuff stuck in the roof of my mouth to first get me to stop unconsciously sucking my thumb when I slept and then to try and repair some of the damage that was probably actually caused by the unconscious thumb sucking. Years passed and I got fitted with more and more different metal contraptions until finally when I was fourteen or so they said it was as good as it was going to get. My teeth were quite ok for a while but it did not take very long for them to rearrange themselves back to their former twisted state. By the time that it got bad enough for me to really start to care and feel self conscious about it I was already in my late teens and really not willing to go back to having metal braces again. In my head I was pretty much an adult, out in the dating world, going to college soon and I was going to be doing none of that with metal braces. I decided that Invisalign would be the best possible option for me. I knew it would be rather expensive since my insurance policy did not cover it but I did not care. I was working and had some money saved up so I called the orthodontist and made an appointment to have then poke around my mouth and check out all my teeth. The orthodontist said that Invisalign would not be the best choice for me but since I was extremely adamant about not having metal braces again, it was either Invisalign or nothing. The next week I went back to get my mouth molded so that they could get started designing and making my trays. A few weeks after my first appointment where they shoved my mouth full of pink bubblegum flavored goo to get the mold, they called and said my first Invisalign tray was ready. After that I just had to wear each of the three trays for a few weeks until my teeth were ready for the next one. Every once and awhile I would have to go in to get something tweaked or adjusted so that it would be more comfortable but overall it seemed that the process was quite simple and much less painful than I remember the metal braces of my past being. Sometimes they were not terribly comfortable, but at least the weird pressure only lasted a few days before my teeth moved to a place that felt more comfortable.

Getting Your Teen to Wear Braces

Parents find it difficult to convince their teenage children to wear braces. These devices are usually recommended by an orthodontist to straighten and align a person’s teeth thus correcting the bite and improving the person’s overall dental hygiene.

One main problem of braces is its use of wires and ligatures. These are used to put pressure on the teeth to correct any problem and are very effective. They also do not require that much in terms of maintenance. Patients, however, have been found out to develop mouth sores due to the brackets and in the first few days of being attached, braces are often very uncomfortable.

The good news is that there are now a lot of alternative products that your teenager can use. Some orthodontists suggest the use of Invisalign. Unlike other products out in the market, this device uses aligners that slowly move your teeth to the correct position. The aligners are easy to remove and very much comfortable to wear. The most interesting thing about it is that it is clear or near invisible.

Their newest product is the Invisalign Teen. Compared to other product available, this one takes into account the fact that teenagers still have to get all their adult teeth. Depending on the age of the person, there are stages of teeth development as well.

It uses the same technology as with the original but with some nifty additional features. This new product has a color compliance indicator. What this simply means is that the device gives you an idea if it is time to replace it. When the color starts to fade, then it may be time go back to your orthodontist and have it replaced.

The Invisalign has already been known for being customized. This product takes it a step further. It now includes special features that are designed to correct different types of teeth be it canine, or second and third molars. The product does not only suit the lifestyle that your teenager has but the customized way of treating dental problems make it more effective.
How good is the product? One example often cited is about a patient that not only had a cross bite on one side of the mouth but also had a gap in between the front teeth. The patient’s option included possible jaw surgery. Through the use of this product, not only was the cross bite fixed but the gap between the teeth was closed. The patient therefore was able to avoid spending too much through surgery. Not yet convinced? There was also the case of a patient that had crowded teeth. Through this product, the problem was solved and with the addition of a whitening gel, the teeth became whiter.
Some parents though may find the Invisalign a bit pricier compared to other methods but the results and comfort of using one outweighs the cost. To be able to make a better decision for your teenager as to what method to use, consult with your family orthodontist.

Every parent should know what to look for in a pediatric dentist. Choosing a dentist for your child isn’t easy. There are a lot of practices out there and there are also a lot of dentists that don’t have specific pediatric experience, so you need to know who you can weed out. At the right pediatric dentistry practice, your child won’t be just a patient but they will be considered family. We all know that going to the dentist is not the most fun, especially for children. So it would be great to find a place where your child can receive top rated dental care without the normally associated childhood trauma. Experienced pediatric dentistry practices will start getting to know your child early on, and can begin preventative treatments beginning at 12 months and up. This relationship can last all the way up until your baby is no longer a baby but a teenager or early adult. Sticking with the same dentist throughout childhood will help better ensure that problems are detected early and healthy habits are instilled early and often. An extra plus would be that visiting the dentist would turn out to be a positive experience for your child, not a scary one. Getting to know the dentists and dental hygienists early on will establish great relationships early on and will make each visit feel like just that; a visit. And the more frequently your child visits their pediatric dentist, the more likely they are to build and maintain a healthy smile with minimal issues along the way.

Only the best pediatric dentistry practices make sure to remain full-time advocates of your child’s dental health. To do this, they provide personalized care that is different for each patient and level of oral development. You should make sure to find a practice that regularly schedules cleanings as well as preventative screenings so that any problems can be caught and treated early. Pediatric dentists have more specialized training than other family dentists who might unknowingly overlook the early signs of trouble in pediatric patients. These types of specially trained dentists know the dental needs of children, and have taken additional boards and passed certifications for just that.

So why should you choose a pediatric dentist over a family dentist for your children? In a nutshell, pediatric dentists have received more training on the subject. They are required to complete additional advanced courses in this specialty, and they also usually work is specially designed offices that make children feel more comfortable and more welcome. Pediatric dentists make sure to stay current on the latest advanced in dentistry practices and research for children, just like any family dentist would for adults. This provides a little more peace of mind for parents who worry that they children are getting the best possible dental care. With pediatric dentists who will focus on your child’s care and make it a point to develop lasting relationships, you can rest a little more. Just don’t be afraid to ask questions and remain proactive in your child’s care. After all, your pediatric dentist will expect that!

Family dentistry during hockey season is getting easier.

When was the last time you took your children to the dentist? I know that it has been a while for my kids, I like to wait until the end of hockey season before I set up appointments for my children. The simple truth of it is that if I don’t wait, then at least one of the high school teams (my son and my daughter both play varsity hockey) will make it into the playoffs and at least one of my children will wind up knocking out their freshly straightened incisors by blocking a shot late in the third period. Last season my son Steve took a puck to the chin and had all of his lower front teeth broken. After the game I brought him to a pediatric dentist for emergency work to cap his broken teeth and prevent any further damage from being done. At the end of the season I made sure to bring him right back to the dentist and have brand new, sparkling white caps put on so that he could look great in his school photos. And wow, you should see that brilliant smile! There is an old joke about having a grin like a hockey player, but I know that I wouldn’t mind having a grin like my hockey playing son has now. My daughter also needed work done after the season, but nothing so extreme. All that happened was she chipped one of her front teeth when a stick came up on her; she needed to get seven stitches on her chin but it barely touched her teeth at all (and no penalty on the play!). We were definitely lucky it wasn’t worse. We were also lucky to have a good dentist to help us out. How did sports parents deal with the gaps in their kids’ smiles before family dentistry was easily available? Especially back before things like helmets, mouth guards, and face shields were made requirements to participate in high school sports? I know that I can’t imagine taking my son to a dental office that uses the old, terrifying methods of yesteryears’ dentists. The new, modern dental equipment makes it so much less traumatizing to bring your kids to the dentist and get the quality care that they deserve. Even my youngest – she is only just turning ten this month – has no problem with going because the dentists and hygienists are so kind and friendly to her. She is always really proud when she comes home with no cavities. The way in our dentist helps build positive associations with dental health for my children has been amazing. I wish that I had grown up with such a good impression of dentists instead of the fear of them I have that persists to this very day. Maybe I would have been able to do that if pediatric had been around in those days!

Dentists Advocate Brushing and Flossing for Good Reasons.

From the time you are a child, everyone tells you to always brush and floss your teeth. Like washing your hands and looking both ways before crossing the street, it is something that should be utterly ingrained in your mind by the time you are an adult. Unfortunately, a lot of adults still do not practice good oral hygiene. Not taking good care of your teeth and gums has a negative effect on your mouth, but also on your overall health. Bad hygiene habits have been linked to higher rates of a bunch of common chronic conditions. Dentists advocate brushing and flossing for good reasons. If you are not brushing at least twice a day, you could be increasing your risk for various health problems, in addition to cavities and gingivitis. The other half of maintaining good oral hygiene is seeing a dentist regularly. If you have at least two dentist appointments per year, you will be less likely to develop gingivitis or a serious cavity. Both of these conditions can be treated if you catch them before they get out of hand. If you are not keeping up with your dentist appointments, though, you may be allowing these conditions to develop or progress. Having a dentist that you go to regularly is often the best way to go about things.

Cosmetic Dentists Can Give You that Perfect Smile

These days, everyone seems to be looking for a cosmetic dentist who can give them a perfect smile. There are many cosmetic procedures that your dentist can offer to address different needs. These procedures include teeth whitening or bleaching; enamel shaping and contouring, bonding, veneers, crowns, braces, bridges, and dental implants.
Depending on your habits, your teeth can acquire stains and show discoloration. Most smokers and people who are fond of consuming caffeine-rich beverages such as tea and coffee are prone to having yellow teeth. Any dentist can provide teeth whitening services.

Your dentist will use a chemical process to bleach stained teeth, which can be done either in the dental office or in your own home. Since many patients find whitening procedures done at home more convenient, dentists create personalized mouthpiece trays for patients to use. These trays ensure that the right amount of peroxide solution is applied to the teeth. However, in-office procedures offer faster results compared to whitening at home, which can two or more weeks depending on the strength of the solution.

For people who have gaps between their teeth or have chipped, cracked, or broken teeth, a cosmetic dentist will recommend undergoing a bonding procedure. The materials used for bonding can also be used to fill cavities and protect an exposed tooth root. Bonding can last for several years but it is prone to staining, chipping, and wearing down.

Veneers, on the other hand, last longer than bonding. These are custom shells applied on the front sides of the teeth to change either its shape or color. They are usually made from ultra thin porcelain but there are also veneers made of plastic. This cosmetic procedure can improve teeth with gaps in between, chipped or worn teeth, poorly shaped teeth, and slightly crooked teeth. If your teeth are permanently stained, your dentist may also recommend veneers.

Dental implants are recommended for patients with missing teeth. This is a quite costly cosmetic dentistry procedure but it offers a long-term solution to replace teeth. Implants are alternatives to bridges and removable dentures. An implant has three essential parts, specifically titanium metal, an abutment, and the crown. A cosmetic dentist can create a crown with a natural, tooth-like appearance. The crown completely covers the tooth. It is also used to restore a tooth to normal shape. In addition to covering dental implants, a crown can be used to cover a misshapen tooth, a stained tooth, a tooth with a large filling, and a tooth that has undergone a root canal procedure. You may also need a crown to protect a weak tooth, restore a broken tooth, and hold a dental bridge in place.

Cosmetic dentistry has a lot to offer individuals who want to improve their physical appearances, especially their smiles. Still, as with any cosmetic procedure, there are both benefits and risks that you should be informed of before you decide to undergo any of these processes. It is best to talk to your dentist regarding these pros and cons, along with clarifying all possible fees, special maintenance requirements, and professional expertise.

Busting my front tooth and needing a cosmetic dentist to fix it.

The last few months I have gotten really into gymnastics and partner acrobatics, it is a really fun way to get into shape and meet new people. Because most of the stuff we are doing is quite a bit off the ground I have seen a few people fall or hut themselves in one way or another. Of course we all try to be as careful as possible but sometimes accidents happen. Unfortunately I experienced my first accident a week ago when I was trying to learn a few things on something called a hand-balancing stand. Try to imagine, it is essentially a piece of wood on the ground with two poles coming upward with little wood blocks on each end. The idea is that you grab the two little blocks of wood and can do handstands or whatever other kind of maneuver holding your weight with your arms. I may have been a little ahead of myself given that I have almost no upper body strength and was trying to use this thing anyway. I made it for a few seconds before my arm gave out under me and I came crashing to the floor. It wouldn’t have been so bad except on my way down my face fell right on one of the wood blocks. Specifically, my mouth hit right on the block, launching half of my tooth away from its happy and content place in my mouth. At first I was just shocked that I had fallen and then the intense pain of hitting my mouth hit me. It took me a minute to realize that half of my tooth was gone but as soon as I realized I freaked out. I have never done something like this before and it was a little shocking to my system. I really don’t want to go around with only half of a tooth so I called the cosmetic dentist as soon as I got home. I told the dentist that it was a bit of an emergency and that I would really like to get in for an appointment as soon as possible so he was nice enough to schedule me in. I am not really sure what he will have to do, if it would be possible to add on some sort of fake half tooth to the stub that is remaining or if I will have to get the remaining tooth piece removed and get some sort of fake tooth. I am trying not to be too panicky about this but it is hard to keep calm. I know that this isn’t really that big of a deal, worst case I have a fake tooth, but I still can’t help but be nervous and freak out a bit. I guess that all I can do is wait until I meet with the cosmetic dentist next week and see what he says and what my options are. As much as I don’t want a fake tooth if it is my only option than it sure is better than going around with only half of a front tooth.

Cosmetic dentistry can help return your smile.

One of the most moving nonprofits on the planet is called Smile Train. Smile Train works with kids in developing countries that are born with cleft palates. A cleft palate is when the top of the mouth is not fully formed and as a result, children are born with a marked split upper lip. It is difficult to breathe and eat and there is often a lot of social stigma around the problem. To fix this problem, Smile Train goes into these areas and helps the kids by performing the surgeries free of cost. Considering that many of these kids often do not go to school, due to the fact that many of these kids receive so much harsh stigma, the economic benefits of this program are immeasurable. This sort of procedure happens here, in the United States, as well.

It is worth keeping an eye on these kids of procedures and acknowledging the impact that they can have on people’s lives. Nevertheless, there are also a number of other procedures that many of these cosmetic dentists perform. Many cosmetic dentists also do dental implants and oral surgery in addition to the cleft palate surgery. These surgeries, while they are all different, do a great job for when it comes time to improving someone’s smile. There was a recent survey of human resources generalists around the first impressions they get when they are interviewing someone. By far and away the most common response was the smile. People often see the smile before anything else and as a result, they are able to make a decision based off of their entire impression. People that do not have the ability to fully smile are losing out on this benefit and that often comes with taking care of your teeth and medically being comfortable with your smile. One of the best ways to ensure that you are going to be comfortable with your smile is to take care of your teeth. This sounds like an easy enough process, but it rarely is. Cosmetic dentistry allows for all people to be comfortable with their smiles. This, again, is something that is immeasurable for when it comes to putting the economic impact in a frame of focus.

If you are someone that is looking at getting some kind of cosmetic dentistry work done, then look no further than our office. We specialize in making sure that people are content with their smile. They can do a number of different procedures that will make people all over the area happy with the results. By carefully selecting staff that have the ability to be precise, efficient, and happy, the dentist office is able to be successful in many of its endeavors to ensure that people are repeat customers and are able to come back with a positive outlook on what they have experienced. Word of mouth is the best form of marketing and that is what the office is able to rely on and promote.

Braces Make a Beautiful Smile a Healthy Smile

A beautiful smile can be a game-changer. When you seek out an orthodontist , you are making an investment in a beautiful smile that will last a lifetime. And this seems to be the primary association with braces. Most people seem to think about braces being a means to a beautiful smile, and they are. Braces allow you to correct mistakes (like unconsciously pushing your teeth with your tongue, as I did as a child) or straightening up the teeth that just came in as they did. But as much as people associate orthodontics with beauty and aesthetics, the health benefits are just as pronounced. There is a tight relationship between the beauty of your teeth and the health of them, and the relationship tends to be a positive one. I do not mean that it is a good relationship but that that as one variable (beauty) increases, the other variable (healthiness) increases by the same margin. So the healthier your teeth are, the better they are going to look. Straight teeth have healthy gums. Your teeth fit together in nice, neat little rows, and the roots are doing the same thing underneath the surface. Your baby teeth do not sink in deep roots, but the teeth that you have as an adult depend greatly upon the health of those gums. If you catch crookedness early, you will be able to correct gums gone awry and fix them more easily. Beyond the straightness of the gums, braces also help you chewing motion. For people with relatively straight teeth, it may seem like a silly thing, but consider how important chewing is for your health. I think that someone that has ever had mouth surgery, such as getting their wisdom teeth removed, can appreciate the importance of being able to fully chew your food. Your teeth are supposed to fit together like the cogs of a gear. When they are not straight, this chewing motion is not properly done. Braces improve your ability to fully chew your food, thus, digesting it fully and extracting the maximum nutrients out of it. The last reason that it is good for your overall health to have straight teeth also has to do with straight teeth. You teeth are easier to clean when you have straight teeth. Flossing and brushing is done more easily when you have a straight path between teeth. But the most interesting thing (to me, at least) with the relationship between beautiful teeth and healthy teeth is that one is an epiphenomenon of the other. I find it interesting to reflect upon the idea that where you find one, you are bound to encounter the other. This increases the urgency that one might have to take care of their teeth. You want to make sure that you teeth are healthy so that they yield an attractive smile. In this case, the immediate benefit and the long-term benefit are inextricable. Braces help you achieve both with the same route.

Bride to be, Nearly Panics Over News That She Needs Braces.

Planning a wedding can be extremely stressful. Jamie had been so excited and surprised when her boyfriend, Greg, had proposed, but she had not thought about everything that needed to go into planning their wedding. Immediately after telling their families the good news, the questions started rolling in: When were they going to have it? How many people could the venue hold? Would each set of parents be able to invite all of the friends they wanted to bring?
Jamie and Greg were stunned. They had no idea how much their families were going to weigh in on all of their decisions, and how long the guest list would get. They had a specific budget in mind but it was clear they were going to have trouble staying under it if all of their parents’ friends and their kids were invited. It was starting to seem like they did not have any control over their own wedding.

Adding to Jamie’s stress was her most recent appointment with her orthodontist. After years of having perfectly healthy teeth and not even a cavity, he was recommending that she consider getting braces as her teeth had started to shift ever so slightly. She pointed out that she was planning on getting married in the next year, and he reminded her that if her teeth continued to shift, she might have a gap in her front teeth she did not want on her wedding day. Frustrated, Jamie had gone home and complained to Greg about the position she felt she was being put in. One more expense, and one more decision she would have to make about their wedding day with everyone else’s input.
Greg suggested that she look into alternatives such as Invisalign, and that seemed to make the most sense to her. She consulted with her orthodontist who agreed it was the perfect option for her, and she ended up making the appointment to have them put on. She consulted with the photographer as well, knowing that she would still have them on during her wedding day, and the photographer assured her that even if they were slightly visible in the pictures that she would be able to edit them out. Jamie was relieved she would not have to look back on her wedding day and see the braces that she knew were there.

Once all of the family members calmed down and the guest list was narrowed down to only close friends and family, Jamie felt like she could finally relax and get to enjoy the planning. She loved design and party planning, and was deeply interested in her color scheme and decorations. Relieved at the thought that her teeth would be straight and at least look braces-free in pictures, she was able to sit back and relax, and ultimately enjoyed the rest of her wedding planning. It is coming up in just a couple of weeks, and she and Greg cannot wait to see how all of their hard work has turned out!

Family Dentist Reviews: Great Dentists

When most people think about preventative care for their teeth, they think about brushing their teeth twice a day and flossing just as frequently. Many people imagine that this is sufficient for keeping your teeth and gums in the best health. Unfortunately, this is just not the case. There are a lot of other preventative periodontal measures that you should take in order to make sure that your teeth are in the best possible shape. After all, we rely on our teeth for quite a bit. From chewing to expressing emotion to other more functional things, we need our teeth in good health in order to live our lives in the way that we are currently accustomed. Without good oral and dental health, this just will not be the option that we want it to be. That’s why our periodontists and dental health experts have worked so hard to make your dental and oral health a priority, both when you visit their office in addition to when you go home and begin handling your own dental care.

Perhaps the most important part of dental health that folks often forget to pay attention to is the close monitoring of their gums. If you do not take good care of your gums, you are definitely at risk for gum disease and other diseases of the mouth. We often forget that in order to protect against the many diseases that seek to assault our mouths, we must always be looking out for the best way to do more for our teeth. We do this really well by helping you not only get the consistent teeth cleaning you need, but also by helping you identify possible problem areas. One thing that you should do to ensure that your teeth in are good health is to consistently screen for oral cancer, especially if there is a history of oral cancer in your family. Indeed, this is an important part of a dental visit for any patient. There have been so many advances in periodontal technology that it can be easy to see markers of a potential issue much earlier than ever before. This is the kind of promising treatment that people with oral cancer can hope for as it will allow treatment before the problems are irreversible.

Oral cancer screenings are easy to perform and can save you a lot of issues in the long term. By using a device that employs ultraviolet light, periodontists are able to see abnormalities that would not usually be able to be seen under normal conditions. Additionally, your overall health has a big role to play in your periodontal health, and talking with your periodontist about the health and lifestyle conditions that could impact your risk of oral cancer can also help you avoid oral cancer. The most important thing to remember is that undergoing frequent screenings in order to detect any possible problems early on will lead to a higher likelihood of stopping issues in their tracks.

There are a bunch of horror stories out there involving going to the dentist. We have heard how afraid people are, heard about the blood, the gas, the awful pain. But that is not something that we have to buy into. Those certainly are not the only dental experiences that are out there. Going to the dentist doesn’t have to be an awful experience. You can find an educated and experienced family dentist that is committed to making your dental experience one that feels empowering and educational as opposed to stressful and overwhelming. There is no need to take calming medicines before going to the dentist if you are going to the right dentist.
So who is the “right” dentist. That is a great question.

1. The right dentist is someone that understands they are there to work for you. They don’t have their values out of line in the sense that they put your dental hygiene and dental health first.
2. It’s not about making money to them, it’s about being a healer for people. The right family dentist is someone who goes into this field wanting to help people feel better and take better care of themselves.
3. The right dentist is also someone who is able to offer pediatric dentistry as a part of their work. Little one’s teeth need to be cared for immediately as it can set the tone for their life’s dental health.
4. Finding the right dentist means finding someone that will also offer you educational opportunities. Be that helping you to teach your child how to properly brush their teeth or to inform you of ways that you are can better care for your specific dental situation.
5. You know you have found the right dentist when they customize their services to you. If you are someone who has sensitive gums then they will make sure to be gentle with you and also give you tools to help care for your gums.
6. Something that no one should ever underestimate is the power of a compassionate dentist. A lot of people feel stress about going to the dentist and it doesn’t have to be that way if you have found a family dentist is willing to be patient with you and make you feel comfortable no matter what.
7. A good dentist is someone who is educated and experienced. If you are someone who has complex mouth issues or intense emotional responses to a dental visit than going to a dentist that has a lot of education and experience can make you feel safer and more confident.
All of these reasons and more are why you should choose office for your dental needs. Our dentists fit the above list and each dentist has their own special personality to add something unique to your experience. We offer you a free 10-minute consultation so you can find exactly what you are looking for in a dentist. The power is yours when you choose our practice.

Smiling is the universal sign of happiness. It is a language we are able to speak no matter where we are in the world and being able to flash those pearly whites at others should be a fun way to communicate. Psychologists are saying that smiling can even boost your mood and improve your attitude. Unfortunately for some, smiling isn’t always easy because they feel self conscious about their teeth. In a modern world where flawless features are highly valued, a crooked smile can often lead to issues with poor self esteem. As a result, the world of orthodontics is a constantly growing and changing field offering convenient solutions for many to feel empowered to make choices about their teeth in order to change their smiles. Orthodontists from all over are helping thousands of people better their self esteem with varying orthodontic solutions.
In this day and age, it is more normal than not for kids to have braces put on their teeth once they reach middle school or high school. But what about adults? Thanks to new dental technology, more and more people today are having their smiles adjusted with orthodontics and can do so without other people even noticing.Invisalign is a fairly recent development in cosmetic dentistry that aligns the teeth and bite similarly to dental braces. This method has become extremely popular because clear, plastic retainers are used instead of metal brackets that are adhered to the teeth. The Invisalign treatment is often utilized by adults working in the professional world who do not necessarily want to change their image with traditional dental braces. Even though Invisalign orthodontics tend to be a slightly more expensive solution for tooth alignment, there are many more perks that come with using Invisalign.

1. This method is far less painful than dental braces because the smooth retainers used to re-adjust and align will not rub against the cheeks or gums. Also, the step by step process of switching out retainers every two weeks moves the teeth slower and more comfortably.
2. We are all too familiar with insults such as “Brace Face” and “Metal Mouth” and no one should be subject to those kinds of insults. Invisalign comes with a much less negative connotation than traditional metal braces. The clear plastic is able to shift the teeth without anyone being able to notice along the way.
3. The Invisalign retainer can be removed at will allowing those in the process of correcting their teeth to go about brushing and flossing the same way they would normally do so. Orthodontists recommend leaving the retainers in for 22 hours everyday so that proper movement can occur, yet still allowing for some flexibility to remove and clean after meals.
4. Playing sports and other physical activities come with less risks when you have Invisalign versus metal brackets that can scrape your mouth or break off upon impact.

When considering alternative options for straightening your smile, a proper consultation is always recommended. Many service providers can be researched online and contacted in order to answer all the questions you may have.

Do you find that you are constantly covering your mouth when someone makes you laugh? Perhaps you don’t even realize how much this actually affects you when you are in social settings. A persons mouth is often the first thing we notice about one another when we meet new people and smiling is always the best opportunity to catch someone when they are at their best. If you are constantly covering up your best features, how are people going to really get to know you. In a perfect world, we would all be able to smile with ease no matter how crooked our teeth are or how smelly our breath gets. Unfortunately, that is not the reality we are dealing with today. More and more people are seeking cosmetic dentistry to straighten out their problem mouths. But little do people realize, cosmetic dentistry can also be very much about your overall dental health. Don’t avoid your regular visits to the dentist and certainly don’t avoid seeing a specialist for options that might be able to help with your overall dental health and also your confidence.
So many of us are prone to shove the whole dentist idea to the back of our minds so that we don’t have to deal with it. Some of us are holding onto our irrational childish fears we had of the dentist at a young age. Others are constantly dealing with cavities and other expensive problems and for the sake of their bank account would rather not go back just to find out more bad news. Thanks to the newest advances in dental technology today, dentists are able to make your visit as comfortable as possible. Instead of those awful sharp little picks and the constant sound of drilling and sucking, you will actually be exposed to different machines and tools to ease the anxiety around those sounds. Who knows, you might even be able to relax a little bit in that big cushy chair.

You can schedule a completely free consultation and have a dentist take a look at your mouth to let you know if anything is in jeopardy to your dental health. Professionals here are the lead in the field of dentistry and are specially trained in the newest dental technologies. They are able to focus 100 percent on your specific needs and concerns whether they are embarrassing problems that make you feel vulnerable or they are issues reaching a point of being so painful that it changes your eating habits. Whatever end of the spectrum you might find yourself on, they are seen as equally problematic and the dentists can diagnose you with the same sense of urgency that you are feeling about the issue.

Family Dental Care: Helping everyone

A Dentist Office Should Be Comfortable

Some people just dread the dentist’s office. They think that it is this terrible place. Personally, I do not know what they are talking about. I mean, it is not the same thing as going out for a steak dinner or winning the lottery. I do not get particularly excited about seeing the dentist, but I do not have this same kind of intense dread that some people seem to have picked up from who knows where. And yet, this perception of the dentist as this malicious wielder of implements of destruction that is some kind of morbid tooth fairy that is after your teeth persists. If I were a dentist, I would go to great lengths to dismiss this somewhat absurd notion of the dentist as a villain. I would try to undo these misperceptions that the dentist’s office is a place to avoid.

The first thing that I would do is to make my office as comfortable as possible for the patients. At some dentist’s offices that you go to, they have a few chairs lining the walls and some outdated magazines of idiosyncratic tastes. But I have been to other dentist’s office in which the waiting room is a seriously relaxing and comfortable place. The place where I used to get my braces adjusted had video games for the kids, but they also have coffee and TV for the adults. I routinely heard kids protesting when their names were called to see the dentist, not because they dreaded this dentist boogeyman, but because they were too busy having fun in the waiting room. They were having fun in the waiting room? That’s right. And I can imagine that the parents probably protested a bit when they had to leave their nice, comfortable chairs with the TV and coffee to get back to the humdrum of life.

The other thing that I would want to ensure in order to make my dentist’s office a comfortable place for the patients would be to hire friendly, approachable people. The staff can make the difference between a cold, distant experience and one that resembles the bar from “Cheers!” This was like the dentist’s office that I went to as a kid. I liked the dentists, but I also felt very positively about the staff that worked at the dentist’s office. They always knew me personally and would ask me questions about what was going on in my life. It was a great environment for me to end up fostering positive feeling about the dentist’s office. I like to believe that this has somehow altered my attitudes and dispositions about the dentist, thus making me more inclined to practice good dental health practices now.
But this dentist’s office is not just a made up thought experiment. This is not me just imagining an ideal place. Note that I have also made many mentions of place that I had personally visited. Be diligent in your hunt for a dentist that can offer you all of things that can make your experience at the dentist comfortable.
